"I think YOU need to think you're alright"
cooljazzjr0222 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So many great episodes came out of season 2 and 3 as I've mentioned in other reviews - this is one of them.

When you first start off this episode you get irritated because of how people see Shawn - I know it bothered me. But that was the intent - to show that in reality there so many people that think you're different, uncool, or that you don't belong.

But Shawn has so many people in his life that believe otherwise - that are confident that he will be okay and believe in him and the potential he has. Allen encourages Cory to reach out and help Shawn, Cory follows through with that advice, and Turner steps in and reinforces what Cory is trying to say, nevertheless, it's always up to Shawn on whether or not he wants to believe it himself. And the truth is - no mater who you are, where you come from, and what other people try to force on you or say to you (even if it's positive) it's ultimately up to you whether or not you're going to make of your life what you will - no one else can do it for you. You choose you're path. You choose the people you're going to be around, the actions you make, and the life you create.

This episode also reveals a small glimpse of the relationship that Turner and Shawn are going to have in episodes to come and the type of influence that Turner has on Hunter. Shawn has some of the most difficult choices and the hardest background to emerge from but with the people around him - Feeny, Turner, Allen, and even his own dad at certain points - Shawn pushes through and in many cases, later on, becomes more of the mature role models in this show, all while admitting that he doesn't have it all together.

But there is a lot that happens between now and the end result of who Shawn becomes - including the dire episode of "Cult Fiction" where Shawn truly begs the question of who he is, what does he believe in, and "is he truly lost?". This episode is certainly a precursor to that.

Impactful one

Warning: Spoilers
I'm impressive of that show, call me crazy but I discovered its existence less than a week ago and here I am : making a marathon of it. Anyway, for now this episode is by far one of the best for me. After discovering one of Shawn's uncle the last episode, now we are discovering more about his background and frankly how well done it was executed. First of all, make facing a 13 years old kid to his 'shameful social situation' dixit idiot number one ex date and idiot number two ex date's friend was powerful (knowing that is tough enough to handle for an adult so for a kid of his age even more). It puts him before a turning point of his life : thinking of him as a nobody because of the silly reason his ex date gave him to ditch him and go for it head against the wall pushing his best friend away from him, the way they portrayed us that was really impactful. Telling the truth, their friendship is one of the main reason I got hooked on that show and in just one episode, we got countless powerful scenes between them so well done executed and acted by both of them. Plus, the justest of how that subject was treated was outstanding. That teenage show got something more than the others, I don't know exactly how to define it but that incredible way they have to make everything really relatable and realistic, pure but not flawless, a show which doesn't attend to be perfect but be real and teaching us lessons without falling in the bossy side. I don't know, I mean I'm 24 and still I'm completely hooked on it. Anyway, Shawn was really interesting in that one, I always sensed some hiding sides of him, that he had some tough issues to handle, choosing to hide them behind his funny player apparence. But most importantly (and what was incredibly lighted up in that episode) his high level of vulnerability and lack of self esteem. The way is insisting to know what Turner thinks of him, if he's really convinced he's gonna be able to make it through no matter where he came from, that in the end he'll be fine, the despair on his eyes waiting for the answer just killed me, it's just gave me the urge of hugging him tightly (way to go to Rider Strong for delivering us such excellent acting skills by the way). I think that's is the main reason why Shawn is by far my favorite : a complex character with a lot a flaws but deeply integrate, loyal and with a pure heart, knowing that he doesn't even realize how much he's a good friend and worthy as a person.

Great ep.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a very important ep for Shawn because it is the beginning of an emotional arc for Shawn that will echo throughout the show about how sensitive he is to being treated differently about how he is living and how he grows up. It's also another instance of Shawn getting upset when he thinks people are feeling sorry for him. This is a great episode not only because of the growth between Shawn and Cory but also because I think this is the beginning of the relationship that will grow between Shawn and Turner. I also like that it seems like Harley was actually impressed by Cory's guts and the way he stood up for his friend.

Annoying

Warning: Spoilers
I'm rewatching BMW...doing my best to rate every episode.

I do like when Eric gets more goofy...but maybe he gets TOO goofy.

So, season 2....is ok. Very mediocre episodes so far.

I'm stingy with my 8's 9's and 10's.

7 are very solid episodes, and 6 are...fine enough to watch again if they pop up.

Anything 5 and under...pass.

This one is a 4.

Few things bad with this.

A different Harley Kiner actor??????

And.. This may not be the first episode he does this ..but I forgot about how much a whiny baby Shawn can be.

I don't know why the show went this direction so often...and why they couldn't have gotten to the same point from a different direction.

Whenever Shawn is like this, it's annoying bc it's so irrational.

And....the episode before, Shawn is helping his uncle repair the bike and gets the price knocked down.

An episode later and he's even considering doing this? Weak sauce.

Addendum: I do feel, that a GREAT opportunity was missed with this episode/scene.

Mr Turner could have highlighted the fact, that without a great friend...when life presents you with those few key moments that will decide the fate of your life...and a decision has to be made...you want and need a Corey Matthews there to help you make the positive right decision and not the negative wrong decision.

Shawn's life can go this way...or that way...and it will come down to the decisions and choices he makes. You'll need a Corey to make sure you make the right decisions and choices that will make your life.

I can't even remember what low hanging, shallow point they made. Had an opportunity to teach an impactful memorable lesson....swing and a miss.
