Ethan's last episode
katierose29522 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
It's Buffy's birthday again, but this time it's Giles who gets into trouble. "A New Man" confronts Giles' fears that he no longer has a place in Buffy's life. The episode is an interesting take on Kafka's "The Metamorphaosis." Thanks to Ethan Rayne, Giles wakes up as a huge, lumbering Feural demon. The Scoobies think that he "ate up" Giles and are trying to kill him. He can't communicate with Buffy or Xander and he has no place to go. Only Spike recognizes Giles and understands his grunts. The Scoobies have been falling apart this season, something only Spike seems to see. This episode is gives us a clearer picture of Giles' insecurities, the growing distance between the Scoobies and Spike's increased presence in the group. It also introduces the "314" thing, which will lead into the next part of the season's story arch. You really shouldn't skip this episode if you're watching on DVD.

Basically, "A New Man" is all about Giles' trying adjust to the changes in his life. He's no longer a librarian. He's no longer a Watcher. He's alone and has no real direction in his life. To make matters worse, he thinks that Maggie Walsh is taking his place as Buffy's mentor. When he finds out that Buffy didn't tell him about the Riley and Maggie being part of the Initiative, he's hurt and angry. He meets up with Ethan Rayne, who's back in town, and the two of the sit around chatting about old times. Ethan tells him that there are rumors in the demon ranks about a mysterious "314." After a hard night of drinking a feeling sorry for himself, Giles wakes up the next morning as a Feural demon. He soon finds himself being chased by the Initiative and the Scoobies and winds up at Spike's new tomb. Spike "happens to speak" Feural and he agrees to help Giles for a price. (200 dollars.) The two of them head off to find Ethan, while Buffy and Riley try to track down the "Feural demon" who they're convinced took Giles.

There are some good parts to the episode. Giles bribing Spike to get him to help is hilarious. Being over a century old, Spike has trouble adjusting to the cost of things in the modern world. (Angel has the same problem over on "Angel" where he insists "I'm not cheap, I'm just old.") Spike's used to be evil and just stealing whatever he needs, so it's kind of cute that he has no idea how little 200 dollars will buy. He stunned when Giles promises it to him so quickly. And their scene in the car is also great. You have to smile when Spike lectures Giles on a Feural demon's powers. "Well, you have the mucus thing." Also, I think that Giles chasing Maggie Walsh down the street is just about the highlight of the season.

On the downside, I do think that Buffy could be paying more attention to Giles and her friends. The problems in the Scoobie ranks will continue to grow through out the season. Also, did that monster thing rise from that tomb or not? Giles went there to stop it, but we didn't get a lot of resolution. And, why was Ethan even in the cemetery? Was he just waiting for Giles to show up? If so, how did he know that Giles would be there? Finally, I'm sorry that this is Ethan's last episode. I just love that guy.

My favorite part of the episode: Giles coming face to face with Ethan in the tomb. Giles leaves, thinking that the place is empty. Ethan sneaks out of his hiding place and starts in on an evil monologue. Giles hears him and suddenly opens the door again. "Oh d*mn." Ethan mutters. "I thought you'd gone." It's such a cool way poke fun at the ordinary "talking villain" scene. It makes me laugh every time I see it.

Giles shows his demonic side!
Tweekums30 May 2019
As this episode opens Buffy is lured to a surprise birthday party... of course for her the biggest surprise is that her birthday isn't ruined by the forces of evil. She isn't the only person getting a surprise; Giles is shocked to learn that Buffy, her friends and even Spike know about the Initiative but nobody thought to tell him. When he learns of a new prophecy he heads to a crypt and is unpleasantly surprised to meet old friend Ethan Rayne. The two end up in a bar talking pondering where the years have gone. Ethan also says something that suggests The Initiative may be more sinister than though; something they are doing is scaring demons and not just because they hunt demons. The next morning Giles feels different... he has become a demon! To make things worse the only person who can understand him is Spike... everybody else just thinks he is an evil demon who probably killed Giles and now they want to kill him.

This episode was a lot of fun. There was plenty of good character development, hints of ominous things to come, some tense moments and genuinely funny scenes. For me the funniest was Professor Walsh trying to impress Buffy by letting her know how many demons/vampires Riley had dispatched... seventeen! Having Giles turned into a Demon was a good idea which led to some good action where we are concerned for both people fighting. Away from the main story it looks as if Buffy will be invited into the Initiative and Willow and Tara are practicing magic together. The cast are on good form; Anthony Head and James Marsters stand out as Giles and Spike; their scene in Giles's car was priceless. Overall a top quality episode.

Giles mid-life crisis
ossie8517 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When Giles realises that he is out of the loop, he becomes upset and questions his role with the Scoobies. This is increased when Ethan Rayne shows up and subsequently turns him into a demon unable to speak English. This leaves Giles and Spike to try and figure out away to turn him back.

Why It's So Good - I think Ethan Rayne was a terrific foil to the team, and it is a shame we didn't get to see more of him (RIP Robin Sachs, btw). Anthony Stewart Head sold his transformation very well, and his back and forth with Spike was terrific.

Watch Out For - Giles attacking Professor Walsh.

Quote - "We use the latest in scientific technology and state-of-the-art weaponry and you, if I understand correctly, poke them with a sharp stick." - Maggie Walsh (about Buffy's slaying methods)

The One Where Giles Turns Into A Demon...
taylorkingston21 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. I really do. It's fantastic and amazing and great all at the same time. I really love to see Giles in a different form. It's so interesting.

In this episode, Ethan Rayne has come back to Sunnydale looking for some revenge on Giles and he gets it, sort of. Giles is turned into a demon and no one can tell it's him. He's not speaking English and when he comes across Spike, they can understand each other. Giles bribes Spike to help him, without anyone finding out what happened to him. This doesn't work because Buffy and the gang are already trying to find Giles, thinking that this demon, who is Giles, killed or kidnapped him. In the end, Ethan turns Giles back, right in time for Buffy to not kill him.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

A New Monster in Sunnydale
claudio_carvalho9 August 2006
Ethan Rayne invites Giles for a couple of drinks and puts a spell on him, transforming Giles in a primitive strong monster. Spike is the only one to understand the language spoken by the monster, and Buffy almost kills him.

"A New Man" is an irregular episode of Buffy, but also worthwhile. There are some continuity mistakes in the bar, the way Buffy recognizes Giles is ridiculous, but there are also some very funny moments, like Giles chasing Professor Maggie Walsh or trying to communicate. Spike again has the funniest lines. My vote is eight.

Buffy joins the Initiative
Joxerlives14 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Everything with demon Giles but I also adore the scene where Giles and Ethan get drunk together.

The Bad; Couldn't Giles just write 'I am Giles' on a big piece of paper? Or is the point that he's too embarrassed?

Best line; Walsh; "We thought you were a myth" Buffy; "Well you were myth-taken"

Knocked out; Giles comments that he has a tendency to get knocked on the head.

Jeez!; Mucus!

Kinky dinky; Giles comments that Ethan and Giles are older than him and 'Not as attractive'. Riley says that he likes it when Buffy is in charge.

Calling Captain Subtext; The whole Giles/Walsh scene and him scaring her later. Willow and Tara's rose magic session is filled with Sapphic hints. Giles calls the Initiative commandos 'nancy' Giles thinks Ethan is telling him he's very attractive. He's actually talking to the waitress but I know what we all thought for a moment.

Guantanamo Bay; The Initiative are tapped into the emergency telephone system and Riley has a key to open every shop in Sunnydale. He also has the power to haul Ethan off to indefinite detention at the end of the ep. Again this is all pre-War on Terror, Joss appears pretty prescient.

Where's Dawn? How did she and Joyce celebrate Buffy's birthday?

Missing scenes; Loved to have seen this; Waitress (looking at Ethan's note) "You're not Roger Moore!" Ethan; "Yes I am. Tell her Ripper" Giles (drunkenly) "What? Oh, he's not Roger Moore"

Apocalypses; 5, Riley comments that he needs to learn the plural

Questions and observations; Unfortunately the last time we'll see Ethan Rayne although he does return in the comics. Very nice to have a Giles-centric episode as we haven't had one in a while. Riley has personally killed 11 vamps and 6 demons. According to Boo's figures however here's the rest of the scoobs.

Kills:

Buffy: 74 vamps, 26 demons, 5 monsters, 3 humans, 1 werewolf, 1 spirit warrior & a robot

Giles: 5 vamps, 1 demon

Cordy: 3 vamps, a demon

Will: 4 vamps

Angel: 3 vamps, 1 demon, 1 human

Oz: 3 vamps, 1 zombie

Faith: 16 vamps, 5 demons, 3 humans

Xander: 5 vamps, 2 zombies, a demon, a demon

Anya: a demon

As Buffy birthday's go this one is actually pretty successful? But does anyone really ever get surprise parties like that? I heard that Robin Sachs is actually an expert martial artist and that Peter O'Toole's wife left her husband for him. Anya still working on her humanity, Buffy refers to Riley as her boyfriend for the first time. First hints of something sinister in the Initiative. Tara back, yay! Byebye to Giles' Citreon. Magic shop again. We already see that Buffy won't blindly follow orders like Riley will. The motel Ethan stays in looks the same one as Faith used to stay at.

Marks out of 10; 7/10

Giles bat boy
Realrockerhalloween3 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The new man follows Giles as he feels he no longer has purpose or a job to occupy his time. At a bar with his old friend Ethan they share a few drinks and he wakes up in the morning a monster. This is a weak season four episode as Giles appearance is the only thing that changes yet can think rationally going to others for help. The only moment that really stands out is when he takes the opportunity to scare Walsh walking down the street for berating him earlier. It turns out Ethan gave him a potion for what reason is anyone's guess as it isn't explored or covered very well.

Another aspect that I find interesting is Buffy thinking the creature killed her father figure and wanting to kill it with extreme prejudice. It really shows how close they've grown together and how much love or hurt they can heap on one another if they get hurt or die.

The Weakest Rayne.
Son_of_Mansfield24 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The is the last and least satisfying of the four episodes featuring Robin Sachs as Ethan Rayne. He is more interesting in what he means to Giles than as a character to himself. The episode is also not fully successful in bringing Giles back into the fold although Buffy's line about recognizing him because no one else could look so disappointed by her and the fact that Spike saves the day keeps the episode from being a total waste. Spike has a few zippy one liners, but it is the confrontation between Giles and Professor Walsh and his enjoyable terrorizing of her in demon form that are the highlight of this episode. While Miss Calender may have lit his fire, Maggie Walsh makes Giles do his annoyed trademarks, first he cleans his glasses and second he puts his hands on his hips. Feel the wraith of his misplaced anger, you jargon flinging Frankensteiner.

7 out of 10.
