Buffy "King Arthurs" a magic ax and prepares to save the day
katierose2959 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I love Angel. I really do. But, I don't think he should have returned for the final episodes of BTVS. Just like I agree that Buffy shouldn't have been on the finale of "Angel." The characters and shows are in different places now. The Buffy and Angel scenes in "End of Days" and "Chosen" seem strained to me. Angel loves Cordy (even though she's in a coma) and Buffy is finally moving on with Spike. Bringing Angel back to reestablish his romance with Buffy, seems like a deliberate way to set up "Angel" season five. So, when Spike jumps over to that show, he and Angel can continue their rivalry for Buffy... Even though Buffy's not there. "Angel" season five is one of my favorite seasons in the entire Buffyverse. (It's better than BTVS season seven, as a matter of fact. I actually enjoy watching Spike and Angel interacting more than either one of them with Buffy, since they're really funny together. That whole season's a joy and I HIGHLY recommend that you see it.) But, it doesn't seem fair to take away from BTVS to establish something for "Angel." There are actors on this show who don't get enough screen time as it is. "End of Days" doesn't even have scene where the Scoobies apologize and emotionally reconnect after voting Buffy out of the house. I just disagree with the way it was done. That said, "End of Days" is a fairly good episode that sets-up the series finale. You can't skip it if you're watching the show.

"Basically, "End of Day" revolves around Buffy finding that ax thing at the vineyard. It turns out that it's a magic Slayer weapon forged in someplace or other for some reason that I'm not real clear on. (I kind of disagree with the whole "magic ax" thing so I don't pay a lot of attention to it. BTVS is usually about beating evil with individual skills, creativity, and team work, not super weapons, but I digress...) Anyway, it's really powerful. Buffy then heads of to save the Potentials and Faith who have been wounded in an explosion. Also, UberVamps attacked them. Sadly, most of the Potentials survive. (Was that too sarcastic? Sorry, I just hate the Potentials.) Buffy takes them all back to the Summers' house, where she is kinna welcomed back as leader. Buffy puts Giles and Willow in charge of researching the ax.

Meanwhile, she asks Xander to take Dawn out of Sunnydale. She is scared for her sister's safety and she wants Xander to protect her. Xander agrees. He chloroforms Dawn and drives her away. Then Dawn wakes up, tazers Xander and drives back to town. Anya and Andrew head to the hospital for more medical supplies. Giles and Willow tell Buffy that the ax is connected (or something) to some tomb on unconsecrated ground. Buffy goes off to look for the tomb, just as Spike returns home. They have a nice talk about their night together. Buffy goes to the graveyard, finds the tomb and is talking to the old lady who made the ax (or whatever), when suddenly Caleb appears. He kills the old lady. He and Buffy fight. Angel comes in and hits Caleb. Angel and Buffy kiss. Spike is- somehow- standing there and sees them.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like Spike and Buffy's kitchen scene. It's really sweet that they're both nervous about talking after their night together. And then Spike finally admits that he's terrified because it was the best night of his life. He's so cute. And I think it's a pretty big compliment to Buffy, since just holding her while they slept beat out Spike's previous "best night ever:" Killing that Slayer in China. (See season five's "Fool for Love.") Also, I like Anya administering care to the wounded Potentials. "Shhh... Talking will just make you die sooner." And Buffy and Xander's conversation in the kitchen is nice. Buffy gets pouty when Xander insinuated that she might be killed in the upcoming fight. Xander works to cheer her up. "Hey, if you die, I'll just bring you back again. It's what I do." Finally, you just have to laugh when Dawn mutters that she never leaves loaded cross bows lying around. "Not after that time with Miss Kitty Fantastico." I wondered what happened to Tara and Willow's cat.

On the down side, what's the deal with that stupid ax thing? It seems a little cheese-y to me that it's just laying around Sunnydale. And who is that old woman? The watcher of the Watchers or something, right? Well how is she watching anything, all sealed up in a crypt? She didn't even know Buffy's name. And the old lady made the Slayer an incredibly powerful weapon, but hid it... Why, again? Am I missing something or does this have a ton of loose ends? And why is Angel conveniently at that crypt at of all places? For that matter, why is Spike there? He's suppose to be at the vineyard. And how, after seven years of patrolling cemeteries every night, is Buffy just now seeing a pyramid tomb sitting on unconsecrated ground? Was it invisible before? Back in season four's "Doomed" she says that she's memorized the inscriptions on the tombs, but she just-- What?-- Missed this gigantic crypt with a woman living inside? It doesn't make any sense. Also, it was daylight when the Scoobies tracked Buffy to that abandoned house. And it was light when Buffy left for the vineyard. So if the house is now empty, where did Spike go?

My favorite part of the episode: Anya and Andrew stealing hospital supplies and having wheel chair fights, while talking about life, death, humanity and "Jaws." She mentions that she won't be running away from this Apocalypse like she did that "other" one, meaning season three's "Graduation Day Part Two." An episode which also, interesting enough, had a "Jaws" reference.

Warning: Spoilers
Buffy takes the scythe from Caleb, and goes to help Faith and the potentials. Buffy destroys three Turok-Hans with ease with the scythe, and takes it back to the gang to research. Buffy tells Xander to take Dawn away. Spike tells Buffy that the night before was the best night of his life. Buffy fights Caleb and is helped by Angel, who has suddenly arrived from Los Angeles.

Why It's So Good - We are building to a final showdown as we get ready to say goodbye to Sunnydale.

Watch Out For - Wheelchair wars and Giles' food.

Quote - "Xander, my crossbow is not out here. I told you, I don't leave crossbows around all willy-nilly. Not since that time with Miss Kitty Fantastico." - Dawn.

What's past is prologue...

Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Even the most ardent Spuffer must cheer at the sight of Angel's return.

The Bad; The First says once the Hellmouth has opened it will enter all humanity. But wasn't it already there? DB's name in the opening credits, will they ever learn?

Best line; Faith; "Thank god we're hot chicks with superpowers!" Buffy; "Takes the edge off" although I also like; Caleb; (indicating the scythe) "Unless you can prise that out of solid rock" (Buffy effortlessly does just that) "Darn!"

Women good/men bad; The Guardians have been looking out for Slayer all this time, protecting them from the male domination of the Watcher's Council (who in fairness do have female members?). Whilst it's fine for Angel to help Buffy out in her final battle with Caleb it's important that she defeats him herself, Buffy isn't the damsel who needs to be rescued, she's the heroine and she beats him on her own terms.

Jeez!; Anya has the possibly the worst bedside manner ever. Also the poor potential being ripped apart by the Turok-Han and the Guardian's neck being broken.

Kinky dinky; Willow comments that 'Scythe matters'. Do we count Caleb and the First as sex? Faith comments that Wood doesn't lack for stamina. Spike says that he and Buffy have done things he 'Can't even spell'.

Captain Subtext; Buffy seems more than a little upset that Faith has bedded Wood. Buffy remarks to Spike that she doesn't need him to be defensive and send mixed signals because 'I have Faith for that'.

Apocalypses; 7,

Recurring characters killed: 17, alas Miss Kitty Fantastico, we knew her. No wonder Dawn warned Kennedy about messing about with crossbows! Jesse, Flutie, Jenny, Kendra, Larry, Snyder, Professor Walsh, Forrest, McNamara, Joyce, Katrina, Tara, Quentin Travers, Chloe, Molly, Miss Kitty, Jonathon

Sunnydale deaths; 3 potentials gone although none are recurring characters 110

Total number of scoobies: 35 or so.

Xander, Buffy, Dawn, Willow, Anya, Spike, Giles, Kennedy, Vi, Rhona, Amanda, Chao-Anh, Wood, Andrew, Faith plus an indeterminate number of potentials.

Notches on Scooby bedpost:

Giles: 2; Joyce & Olivia, possibly Jenny and 3xDraccy babes?

Buffy: 4 confirmed; Angel, Parker, Riley, Spike. 3 possible, Dracula+RJ+Shadowmen's demon(?)

Joyce: 1;Giles, 2 possible, Ted and Dracula(?)

Oz: 3; Groupie, Willow & Verucca

Faith:4 ;Xander, Riley, Bullwhip guy and Wood.

Xander: 2; Faith, Anya

Willow: 3;Oz, Tara and Kennedy

Riley; 3; Buffy, Sandy and unnamed vampwhore

Spike; 2 Buffy and Anya

Anya; 2 Spike and Xander

Kennedy; 1 Willow

Wood; 1 Faith

What the fanficcers thought; Common theme in fic is that no matter what befalls the Slayers the Guardians are there to save them. Also when Buffy and Faith finally kiss and make up they do a lot more than just talk.

Questions and observations; Spike mentions The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch which Monty Python's Arthurian Knights used to finish off the killer rabbit. Bet Anya's a fan! Kennedy is quite the leader with Faith down for the count. For a little while you wonder if Xander is actually going to go evil, little looks and things he says like 'Guess so' when the others suggest going to help Faith. I wonder if the whole kidnap Dawn sequence was filmed out of series, that we were supposed to think he had turned evil? Anya comments that she never makes reckless wishes, certainly not with D'Hoffryn out to get her. Buffy says that she loves her friends but ultimately has to stay alone. Faith ventures that she and Buffy always clash because there's only meant to be one Slayer at any one time.

Wouldn't Xander want to take Anya with him if he's splitting town? The First as Joyce told Dawn when the end came Buffy wouldn't choose her and in a sense that's what happens here.

Spike says he's never been close to anyone, presumably not even Dru but then he didn't have a soul, he could only love 'Quite well'.

In her letter to Dawn Buffy tells her that 'Everything I do is for you', Dawn is the reason for the entire Buffyverse. For a moment at the end you think Spike is going to turn into Iago as he watches Buffy with Angel whilst being goaded by The First as Buffy (just as you thought Wes might in WITW when he sees Gunn and Fred). Is this where Spike finally realises that there's no future for him and Buffy? Despite all they mean to each other?

Marks out of 10; 9/10 would get that for Angel showing up alone!

Exactly as it should be

Warning: Spoilers
I actually have to totally disagree with katie's comment above--though, I do love her summaries. Anyway, it would be totally unrealistic for Angel NOT to appear in the last couple episodes of Buffy. Has everyone forgotten that he and Buffy are SOULMATES? For God sakes, people, there is nothing that will change the way the feel about each other. Not time or space or other significant others in their life. Sure, they may move on and be in other relationships, but that doesn't mean they stop loving each other. I think we all know, that if it was possible, those two would be together. Kind of the very definition of soul mates, right?

I, for one, was extremely disappointed with the way Angel ended. I can't believe Buffy wasn't in the last episode. It left me feeling so incredibly empty. Hello? No closure, anyone?! And you could totally tell that the series was ended in a hurry. That show could've gone on for at least two more seasons... Whatever. Don't even get me started on season 5 of Angel... lol

Back to the subject, this episode was amazingly well done. Angel's surprise appearance made it for me, and Ialways love to see the tension that comes with Spike seeing his oldrival. Plus, now they just have one more thing to come to blows about.Buffy's heart. Which, c'mon now, will always truly belong to Angel. :o)

Good

The series was an awesome roller coaster ride of fun, I thought End of Days could have been a little better than it was. First off the red weapon that they use and that is also included in the comic Fray (also by Joss) is an Ax unfortunately everyone misconstrues what a Scythe is. Scythes are the following: the weapon in the hands of Death AKA the Grim Reaper. The weapon in the hands of Father Time. An ancient old English and Japanese Harvesting tool. The small version is called a Kama. The easy way to tell a True scythe from anything else is the shape of the blade, scythes are long slightly curved downward. A sickle is shaped like a C, (russian flag has one). The ax in end of days is truly a Pole-Ax. Other than that misconception by the crew of Buffy. I thought the series end was good. Except that it wasn't the END of the series. As there is a new comic out that is season 8. My all time favorite Buffy episode is "Bewitched Bothered an Bewildered" where Xander talks a witch into casting a love spell on Cordelia and it backfires making everyone BUT her head over heels for him.

I also love watching Angel, I think from angel my favorite episode was the episode with the necromancer in it.

A Powerful Weapon, A Powerful Ally
Samuel-Shovel2 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In "End of Days", after discovering a powerful scythe, Buffy tries to figure out its origin. She uses it to rescue Faith and the Potentials. Spike and Buffy talk about the night they recently shared together and how much it meant to each of them. Buffy asks Xander to kidnap Dawn and take her out of town and out if danger since the final battle is now coming soon. Armed with the scythe, Buffy tries to find its maker. She finds an ancient witch who gives her some info before Caleb shows up and kills her. Buffy and Caleb duke it out. It appears that Buffy is toast but suddenly Angel shows up to lend a hand. Buffy fights back, slicing Caleb with the scythe and ostensibly killing him. Buffy and Angel reunite with a passionate kiss as Spike secretly looks on with the First Evil.

I don't mind Angel coming back for the series wrap up, he's been an integral part of the show for many years so it'd be weird not to include him in some capacity. But the romantic tension between these two should be fully over by now! They've both moved on with their lives. Buffy's seen Riley and Spike romantically since then; Angel's been playing will they/won't they with Cordy. They haven't seen much of each other lately and I figured the romantic angle would have been dropped by now. But apparently we're bringing it back to make Spike fly into a rage in the series finale? I don't know... It feels forced.

Anya & Andrew are two secondary tier characters that the writers could have easily written off the show but for whatever reason continue to be involved. But their scenes don't really add anything to the plot's arc. They feel like leftovers that the writers don't know what to do with.

Into the final episode we head... It's been a long ride!

My only regret? It took 41:38 to end. Maybe THE worst BtVS episode ever!
skay_baltimore13 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Great continuity. The previous episode ended with the clock to the case of C-4 ticking down. This episode starts with the ax in the rock, then eventually moves to the area in which the explosive device has apparently already detonated. What a mess.

Removing the magical ax from the rock. Gee...where has THAT been done before? King Arthur, maybe -- proving that he was the rightful heir to the throne? Disney's "The Sword And The Stone?" "Excalibur"? Yeah...clearly...this has never been (over)done before.

Surviving an explosion of a case full of C-4? Yeah...riiiiiiiiiight.

Buffy...wielding the newly acquired magical ax...killed 3 Uber-Vamps, then issued the order: "Get the wounded. We're leaving."

Summers-Central is now a M.A.S.H. unit.

Many attempts at humor. (The key, operative term...attempts. Even Anya doesn't get her usual killer lines in this episode.)

Buffy to Xander: "You're my strength, Xander. You're the reason I've made it this far". (Huh?) Right before she asks him to dope Dawn (LOL) and get her out of harm's way.

(Anyone else think, after Willow picked up the ax, she'd turn to Giles and say: "Hey, Giles...LOOK...it says right here...'Made In China'?" I mean...everything ELSE is.)

Buffy talking to Faith. (I'd rather watch Uber-Vamps eviscerate each other.)

Buffy & Spike = Ozzie And Harriet from Hell. See...here's the thing...for years now they have been the ultimate dysfunctional couple. Now...because the series is about to draw to a close...we're supposed to believe all this warm/fuzzy stuff? Sorry...not buying it. And it's not that it's out of character from castrated Spike. It's because Buffy is still self-absorbed, mopey Buffy. Consequently, all the warm/fuzzy sentiment just turns into meaningless, empty words.

The only humor in the entire episode: The old woman asks Buffy her name. Buffy tells her. The old woman says: "No really." Buffy shrugs.

And then Angel appears out of nowhere like Indiana Jones to save the day.

This episode = cheesy, hokey, boring, stupid, insulting, mindless, awful, excruciating. It would have been better if the writers had told the public that their dogs ate this episode.
