Warning: Spoilers
"No Place Like Home" is one of the most important episodes of the season. It introduces two important ingredients to the main story arc. First, it explains Dawn's origins, finally telling us where she came from and why no one remembers Sunnydale without her. It turns out that she's a mystical glowy key thing that's been hidden on Earth by monks. Secondly, it's the first time that we meet this seasons Big Bad, Glory. As Buffy explains it, Glory is "sorta like Cordelia." (Vintage Sunnydale High Cordy, not nicer Angel Investigations Cordy, that is.) Glory's often preoccupied with her appearance, pretty vocal about being the queen of all she surveys and willing to pound her enemies into sawdust. With Cordy, though, the pounding was more a social ostracism/verbal insult thing. Glory's just an immortal bad ass who's out to find the key no matter how many brains she has to suck. If you're gonna watch any episodes of season five, you really shouldn't skip "No Place Like Home" because it sets up the whole story arc.

"No Place Like Home" revolves around Buffy investigating Joyce's headaches. Joyce is still sick and the doctors are looking for answers. Buffy is worried that her mother illness might be caused by some supernatural means. Giles holds the grand opening of the Magic Box and Anya, his new employee, suggests that Buffy cast a spell to reveal spells. Intrigued Buffy goes home, sprinkles some special powder, meditates for awhile and suddenly she can see "magic." There's no enchantment around Joyce, but as Buffy moves around the house investigating she starts to notice that the family pictures have Dawn vanishing and her sister is blinking in and out of existence. In other words, Dawn isn't real. Horrified and confused, Buffy jumps to the conclusion that Dawn is a demon of some kind who has cursed Joyce.

The night before, Buffy had stumbled across a glowing golden ball called the Dagon sphere at an abandoned warehouse. It's incredibly ancient and created to repel super-evil beings or something. Also, the warehouse's night watchmen is wheeled into the hospital ranting and suddenly crazy. Buffy heads back to the warehouse for answers. Little does she know that someone else is already there. Glory, AKA the "Beast" has arrived in Sunnydale searching for a key. Glory survives by sucking peoples brains, stealing their sanity and making them into raving lunatics. These crazy people are the ones who can see Dawn is really the key. The key is incredibly powerful and it's been hidden by a sect of monks who are determined to keep it from Glory. She's captured one and is torturing him for information when Buffy arrives.

Buffy is shocked to see Glory. Not so much because Glory is an evil doer who wears silk dresses and designer pumps, but because Glory is stronger than the Slayer. She tosses Buffy around like a Frisbee and laughs off Buffy's punches. Buffy and the monk only escape because Glory gets distracted by a broken heel and accidentally knocks the whole building down on top of her. Outside, the monk tells Buffy the truth about Dawn, She's new to the world and innocent of any wrong doing. In fact, she has no idea that she's abnormal. It seems that in order to protect the key from Glory the monks pressed it into human form. They created Dawn, changed everyones memories, and put her with Buffy because they knew the Slayer would keep her safe. Buffy is amazed and pretty unhappy to hear all this. But when she gets home, she realizes that no matter where she came from, Dawn is still her sister and she loves her. Unfortunately, Glory is still searching for the key and she's not about to give up...

There's a lot to like about this episode. Giles deducing that the Dagon Sphere is supernatural "because it's so shiny" is hilarious. He really has been in Sunnydale too long. And Willow's attempt at gift wrapping is just great. I also love the direction in the scenes where Buffy conducts her spell. The way Dawn's photo phases in and out, her bedroom flashing back to the store room that it was before, even Dawn fading as Buffy watches in amazement... It's all really cool. And I adore Glory. I think that she's one of the most interesting Big Bad's ever on the show. She looks so normal and small and un-evil, that it makes her ability to slam Buffy through walls without even chipping a nail all the more frightening. Glory is tougher than Buffy and she's willing to fight dirty. She doesn't have a conscious or any weaknesses and she's capable of pretty much anything when it comes to getting her own way. Also, I enjoy the "Little Miss Muffit" references in this episodes, which connect back to the Faith/Buffy dream sequence in season three. It's nice to be getting some resolution about what that means. Finally, I always laugh when Anya goes into shopkeeper mode. Her love of money and possessive feelings towards the "Magic Box" will play right into season seven.

On the down side, I really am sad about Joyce's illness. I think that her character has become more interesting as the series progressed and it's a shame that she's sick. I always hoped that she and Giles would get together for real. Also, I kinna wish that Dawn really had been evil. Then Buffy could have fought her and she wouldn't be around for the next three seasons. Just a thought.

My favorite part of the episode: Buffy finding Spike on her front lawn and demanding that he explain that what he's doing out there in five words or less. His response, "Out for a walk, B*tch" just cracks me up every time.

Buffy's Fake Sister
Samuel-Shovel8 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
In "No Place Like Home", Buffy is convinced that an evil spirit is causing her mom's illness. This suspicion leads to Buffy discovering the truth about Dawn and the forces trying to find her. Meanwhile, Giles makes his grand opening of his magic shop and an evil woman with supernatural powers tortures some monks for information.

This is the strongest episode of Season 5 thus far and we really get to see what the story lines will be moving forward. The sequences in which Buffy is in a trance mode are really great, maybe my favorite of the episode. Glory is also a really fun villain in this one. Even Spike brigs a little to the table in this one with his witty banter. There's really no wasted space in this episode. The only qualm I have is the sequence involving the building following on Glory, giving time for the monk to give Buffy 5 minutes worth of exposition. Still, just a small issue.

Where this romantic conflict with Spike and Buffy goes is anybody's guess. Buffy may have unwittingly gotten herself another ally, regardless of whether or not Spike's chip works or not. The other obvious thread to watch is Dawn & Buffy: What will their relationship be like moving forward? Who is after her? A promising start to the season, we'll see what's up next.

Glory days!
Joxerlives28 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Good; First appearance of Glory and she's a kick in the head, love her exaggerated creeping up on Buffy and her rambling madness, panto style. Also clever the way Dawn is actually a little menacing when remarking to Buffy that Joyce will be home soon, is the tea she offers her mother poisoned we wonder for a moment? But the very last scene is beyond beautiful, Buffy stroking Dawn's hair for the first time, the way the Summer's girls seem to express physical affection for one another. Giles' wizard outfit and Anya's skill as a salesgirl are also great. Like the little Anya/Giles moment when they reminisce about the sorcerer. Spike has a small role but it's fried gold.

The Bad; Not much although it seems to be mighty convenient that the building just collapses on Glory.

Best line; Spike; (explaining why he's outside the Summer's house in five words or less) OUT-FOR-A-WALK....BITCH!

Women good/men bad; Nope, female villain time. In fact couldn't Buffy have made a little more effort to make Riley feel needed? Riley's slow fall is agony to watch. Ben comments that Buffy has some serious muscles for a girl.

Jeez!; Brainsucking for the first time and it's HORRIBLE!

Kinky dinky; Spike starts stalking Buffy. Joyce wonders if a 14 year old Dawn could be pregnant? When Dawn asks what Buffy is doing in her room she replies 'My boyfriend'!!!! Glory thinks the stutter is sexy (look out Tara?)

Captain Subtext; Joyce comments that Buffy is so grown up, we'll she's going to need to be.

Guantanamo Bay; The poor monk tied to the chair and tortured

Scoobies to the ER; No but Buffy goes to get Joyce's medication.

Questions and observations; Glory whines about having to live in our reality. Well if you don't like it you can go to hell baby! (or go back there?). That said I think Clare Kramer does a wonderful job as Glory especially when she's acting insane (apparently she's a great friend of ED although they never have any scenes together much as Marc Blucas was a good friend of Christian Kane) Joyce refers to Dawn as 'little-pumpkin belly'. Buffy never had a pet name (except for Sleepyhead?) and never got piano lessons either (Will can play). Anyone else think that the monk on the run from Glory looks an awful lot like a young Lance Henrikson (Aliens, Terminator)? Dawn seems to have inherited Xander's big mouth. Buffy wears a very demonic looking t-shirt? Glory asks Buffy 'Can you fly?', the same words Angel uses in his pilot (and in Robocop)

Marks out of 10; 8/10

Rumours about season 5;

I heard a load of rumours about plot lines in season 5, more than any other year of the show. In no particular order;

1) Xander would turn out to be Glory or one of the other Hellgods from her dimension, Willow would turn evil and be the one to bleed Dawn

2) Dawn would touch Joyce's corpse at the end of The Body and bring her back to life with her Key powers

3) Faith would be released from jail and end up sacrificing herself to save Buffy in the final battle with Glory

4) Drusilla/Dracula would seduce Buffy who'd then allow herself to be sired. VampBuffy would then be the big bad for the season with Faith leading the Scoobies against her and her undead anti-Scoobies. In the season finale VampBuffy would taste Dawn's blood and be restored to normal by The Key's power.

5) Spike falling in love with Buffy and then siring her because he thinks that's the only way to make her love him. In the end he realises he doesn't love unsouled Buffy so uses magic to turn her back to normal.

6) Buffy and Xander get zapped by some demon and he gets her powers. She has to adapt to being ordinary whilst he revels in being a superhero but starts to lose control which is why the Slayer is always a girl.

7) Xander and Buffy would end up in Caritas singing karoke to get some guidance ('Wind beneath my wings'?)

Angel Investigations would show up for the final battle with Glory in Sunnydale along with Riley and Oz.

Now you can see how some of these ideas worked out. Ben rather than Xander is Glory whilst Willow will go evil and threaten Dawn in season 6. Rather than bring Joyce back to life Dawn gives Buffy the will to live in season 6. Faith will be released from jail to hunt Angelus on Angel season 4, Buffy will be the one who sacrifices herself. The Dru-sires-Buffy scenario sounds like a dark- slasher's fantasy but has elements of Buffy-vs-Dracula and Riley and his vampwhores. Dru actually sires Darla instead, Dawn's blood will play a major role in the season 5 finale and Buffy will turn temporarily against her friends in Normal Again. Faith will defeat Angelus by getting him to taste her blood in season 4 of Angel. Spike will fall in love with Buffy but get's his own soul back rather than take her's away. The Xander gets Buffy's powers idea becomes The Replacement, we find out in season 7 why the Slayer is female whilst Riley will return in season 6.

The Secret About the Origins of Dawn
claudio_carvalho23 September 2007
Three monks are under attack of The Beast, a gorgeous woman looking for a mysterious The Key, and they send the powerful device that they protect to another place. Meanwhile, Buffy vanquishes a vampire in an abandoned facility and the security guard gives a glow ball to her, believing it belongs to Buffy. On the next morning it is Giles big day with the grand opening of the Magic Box, and Joyce is sick, with a strong headache. Buffy goes to the pharmacy of the hospital with her prescription, and she sees the security guard she met in the previous night acting like crazy, advising that they come through the family. Buffy gives the ball to Giles, and after his research, he discloses that it is the Dagon Sphere, a protective device against "that which can not be named". Buffy uses magic to disclose the spell that is causing the illness of her mother, faces the abomination and unravels the secret about the origins of Dawn.

"No Place Like Home" is so far the best and most important episode of the Fifth Season. I was upset with the spoiled and annoying Dawn, and I believed there was a complete lack of coherence of the writer since Buffy had been the only daughter along the four previous seasons. However, this episode clarifies the origins of Dawn, in a real plot point of the series. Giles, Anya and Xander are hilarious in Giles' shop of magic stuffs. Now I am anxious to see the sequel of this intriguing episode. My vote is eight.

Deeply personal for Buffy
ossie8519 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When a new power makes its presence known in Sunnydale, Buffy thinks that magic is behind her mother's illness. The new big bad of Sunnydale has taken a monk as hostage and is trying to get him to tell her where The Key is, he refuses to tell. Buffy then finds out a terrible secret about her sister Dawn. Giles' store The Magic Box opens.

Why It's So Good - The concept of Dawn being inserted into Buffy's life is interesting. Dawn is FAMILY, no matter how she came to be. Buffy and Joyce feel her as their sister and daughter. It deeply increases the stakes.

Watch Out For - Giles and his wizard suit.

Quote - "Hey! It's Buffy, isn't it? Ben... but you can call me man-nurse. Everybody else here does." - Ben.

The key
Realrockerhalloween4 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
A fantastic episode as Buffy finds an orb while patrolling and leads to her to a monk that reveals her baby sister may not be real. Going on a vision quest she sets out to find the truth and realizes her mind was altered. The episode plays it creepy at first as Buffy thinks it's evil which leads to Dawn arguing with her, watching as she leaves the house and offers her tea like it may be poison. For a while I kinda believe she was an evil force that killed the old man outside the magic shop and making Joyce sick. It wasn't until Buffy says the monk saying she's innocent and they sent her to Buffy did I Love their relationship. They both share memories, apologize and argue on who gets to be president is sweet.

Another aspect is the mysterious character glory who's sucking out minds and acts like a cartoon villain. I wish they gave more details on who she is as she's fast and super strong with a connection to the key not clear quite yet. The mystery is building up and I can't wait to see how it unravels as its very intriguing with false sisters, orbs and powerful creatures after it.

The One With Glory...
taylorkingston11 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this episode. It's probably because it first introduces Glory, who is undoubtedly my favorite villain from the Buffy The Vampire Slayer series. Next to The Master, and The Trio made up of Warren, Jonathan, and Andrew.

In this episode, a woman arrives in Sunnydale looking for something called The Key. But the key to what? Meanwhile, Buffy investigates to see if there is a supernatural cause to Joyce's illness. While performing a ritual to find out if there is something evil in the works, she discovers that there is something not quite right about Dawn. And the gang helps Giles re-open The Magic Box, and he hires Anya to work in the store.

First appearance of: Glory.

Best part of the episode: Anya working at The Magic Box.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.
