Jonathan the Vampire Slayer
katierose29527 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
From the opening credits you know something's a little bit wrong with this episode. Suddenly the familiar clips of the characters and past episodes are inter-sliced with shots of Jonathan. You know... The guy who once tried to shoot himself back at Sunnydale High in season three and was almost eaten my Xander's mummy girlfriend back in season two? Jonathan the perpetual outsider and poster boy for the uncool is suddenly the central figure of... well... Everything. Clearly there's magic afoot. This is a hilarious episode, which introduces a new "magic can alter everyone's perceptions" premise and builds on the character of Jonathan. If you plan to watch any of BTVS seasons five or six, I suggest you see this episode.

The plot of "Superstar" is really pretty simple. Jonathan is the now the ultimate in super-coolness and can do anything. No one in Sunnydale seems to find this odd. In fact the Scoobies are thrilled to have his help on their cases. Riley and the Iniataive are happy to have the "big gun" around to help. People are desperate to hear him preforming at the "Bronze." Jonathan's everyone's hero. When a strange monster starts attacking people, though, Buffy begins to get suspicious. The creature seems to have a link to Jonathan. As she investigates, she realizes that this reality is wrong and it's up to her to put things back to normal.

The heart of the episode rests on the continuing joke that Jonathan is suddenly the center of the universe. It revolves around his character's insecurities and continued desire to be part of the Scoobie gang. So there's nothing that he isn't taking credit for or being involved with. You have to laugh at all the crazy Jonathan-stuff. He starred in the "Matrix." He has his own trading cards. His face is on cereal boxes. He's a medical doctor. He invented the internet. He's lecturing the Initative on Adam's uranium core. He's a master chess player. He's intimidating Spike. He's helping Buffy fight vampires. He's a jazz musician. He's an object of desire for everyone who meets him. He's signing his books and he's on TV. It's all pretty hilarious if you know and love Jonathan.

There are a lot of good parts to this episode. I like that Jonathan really is trying to be friends with the Scoobies. Giving Buffy and Riely advice and chatting with Giles. He really doesn't think that he's taking advantage of them, which will help explain his horror and surprise when things go so wrong in season six. Jonathan just doesn't see the consequences of his actions until its too late. Also, I think it's interesting that Spike yelps "Hey, you can't do that" when Buffy starts reasserting herself and throws him against a wall. It's as if on some level, he knows that things are wrong here and everyone is just playing a part. And I love Xander setting Giles' ancient text on fire. "Xander, don't speak Latin in front of the books."

"Superstar" also sets up a lot of stuff for the coming seasons of BTVS and "Angel." There's the running "world of shrimp" jokes, which always make me laugh. Plus the episode highlights Jonathan's desperate need for acceptance and for a place to belong. It drives his character and will help motivate his dark turn in season six. The episode also introduces the concept of magic shifting reality. In season five of BTVS and in seasons four and five of "Angel," this idea will be the focus of larger story lines so it's cool to see it playing out here.

On the downside, I imagine that this would be a very difficult episode to follow if you didn't know who Jonathan was. He appears in seasons two and three as a student at Sunndydale High, and he will play a large role in seasons six and seven when he's part of the Trio. But, if you're seeing "Superstar" with no back story, it will be tough to understand all the jokes. Also, I wish that the Scobbies had just allowed Jonathan to be part of the group in the end. So much pain could have been avoided if they'd just seen his desire to be one of them and given him a place to belong, before he hooked up with Warren and Andrew...

My favorite part of the episode: The Jonathan swimsuit calender.

Funny light Episode
sollyharv22 February 2022
Not sure why everyone seems to dislike this episode so much, I found it pretty funny and cute. Sure the concept has already sort of been done on Buffy before but it's a different approach and it has lots of good jokes and character moments.

A classic tale of our hero, Jonathan
ossie8517 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The gang, as usual, go to Jonathan for help over a vampire problem and he of course succeeds. But when a new type of demon attacks Sunnydale Jonathan seems disturbed, Adam seems to think that Jonathan is fake. But surely Jonathan was in The Matrix, is a millionaire, has girls hanging off him and is a superb fighter. He always has been, hasn't he?

Why It's So Good - We've been watching the adventures of Jonathan for a long time now, so it is a brave decision to let supporting character Buffy question his character. It shows what wonderful confidence we have in Jonathan as a character.

Watch Out For - The opening credits.

Quote - "I live here. I wasn't exactly pining for a noisy visit from 'wonder Jonathan and his fluffy battle kittens'." - Spike.

Something is very wrong in Sunnydale... Jonathon appears to be Mr Perfect!
Tweekums6 September 2019
As this episode opens Buffy and friends discover a group of vampires in a crypt but instead of taking them on they seek out the help of Jonathan Levinson... he may look the same as the weedy character from previous episodes but now everybody thinks he is perfect; and perhaps he is. He slays vampires better than Buffy, he is more intelligent than Giles, he is the epitome of cool and to cap it all he lives in a mansion with a pair of attractive blonde twins! Something is wrong; something is very wrong! Then a monster turns up; he claims it is harmless but is clearly rattled when its potential victim describes a mark on its forehead. The only character to immediately know things are wrong is Adam; but he enjoys the chaos; later Buffy suspects but it won't be easy persuading others that Jonathon isn't perfect.

This episode was a great idea and it did provide some good laughs. The concept unfortunately provides its own weaknesses as Johnathon effectively becomes a deliberate Mary sue character in his own corny fan fiction. I liked how the show's opening was modified to include Jonathon among the main cast. The action was pretty good, as was the monster of the week and the explanation of its origin. The regular cast are on good form and Danny Strong does a fine job as Jonathon; just slightly overdoing too perfect character so it looks as though Jonathon knows he isn't really perfect but is keeping up the illusion. Overall a slightly weaker episode but still worth watching.

The One Jonathan Is The Best...
taylorkingston18 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. It's so funny and interesting. I love that we get to see more of Jonathan, since he is one of my favorite smaller-part characters.

In this episode, everything seems to be a little different in Sunnydale, but no one seems to notice or realize. Everything is centered around Jonathan. He is a superstar, hence the title of the episode, in this world. He starred in The Matrix, wrote a book and is an expert demon hunter. But none of these things sound right, and Buffy soon realizes this. When a monster starts attacking people, Buffy discovers that Jonathan changed the world, so he would always be fantastic, but it came at a price, which included the monster being born.

Fun Fact: The opening credits are changed for this episode to show Jonathan's heroic acts.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Awesome.

Jonathan is a hit
Realrockerhalloween3 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Superstar covers Jonathan casting a spell to rewrite history becoming a legend who's the best at everything and everyone wants him. It shows Jonathan still suffers from being unnoticed wanting to be someone important and taken seriously. His high school days really took a toll on him now he wants to be a big shot in the real world. Yet I find it out of character that in exchange to allow a demon to terrorize the town as he couldn't hurt a fly. Even when he was in the bell tower he told Buffy he couldn't do such a thing and only came up to kill himself. It feels like he should've reversed it sooner to keep the character in line with the one who we all know and love.

Another aspect is after the Faith ordeal Buffy feels like Riley doesn't care for her or likes Faith better. Ridiculous to assume as she was in her body, he didn't know and assured her that he still loved only one person. I know its played for laughs but I want Buffy to gain back the confidence she had and to stop being unsecured about every little bad thing that happens around her. She never would've made it this far if she let her personal problems weigh her down.

The Incredible Jonathan
claudio_carvalho18 August 2006
When the fantastic Jonathan visits Sunnydale U.C., everybody wants to be with him: the inventor of Internet; lead actor of "The Matrix"; awesome vampire hunter; stunning singer; great author of successful best-sellers; amazing lover. Meanwhile, a weird and powerful long-armed demon also comes to Sunnydale, marked with an unusual signal. When Buffy sees the same signal on Jonathan's shoulder, she feels that something is not right in the reality.

This episode presents a good idea, but the beginning is quite confused. Jonathan appears without a previous introduction, giving the sensation that something is missing. The logical thoughts and behavior of Buffy shows an unusual maturity of the slayer. My vote is six.

Jonathon the GREAT!
Joxerlives17 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Good; How brilliant is Danny Strong? So glad we had him back in the 6&7 seasons. His final talk with Buffy is a winner

The Bad; Monster looks a bit lame, aside from that, great ep

Best line; Graham;(upon seeing the Initiative's 'tactical consultant' Jonothan) "About time we brought out the big guns"

Women good/men bad; Actually in this case 'man' brilliant but it's hardly real

Jeez!; Poor Tara, you so feel for her

Kinky dinky; Anya moans Jonathan's name during sex and describes him as 'lickable' (as indeed does Buffy although she claims she was only joking). She also seems to find his trumpet playing a turn-on. Jonathan has a threesome with beautiful twins which appears to be an illicit yet universal male fantasy to judge by Austin Powers and all the Buffy/Dawn/Joyce or Charmed sisters incestfic on the net? ('Buffy the Streetwalking Hooker' , 'Thanks for taking care of my body Faith' and 'Don't Go' probably the most tasteful in a HIGHLY dubious genre if you're over 18). Seems to be a subtle yet recurring theme in Joss' work?

Calling Captain Subtext; Exactly why does Giles have a copy of the Jonathan swimsuit calender to hand? Was it a gift? Tara and Willow seem infatuated with Jonathan, one wonders if he suggested it they might come 'running back to boys-town', at least for the night? Xander also seems alarmingly devoted to Jonathan. Spike strokes Buffy's cheek, their attraction evident. Note the evidence of Jonathon's heroism, no wonder he comes good in season 6&7.

Guantanamo Bay; Buffy and Jonothan beat Spike up for info. The police seem quite content to just let Jonothan handle things without their help.

Scoobies to the ER; Poor Tara gets pretty banged up

Where's Dawn? Does she share in the Jonathan idolisation?

Scoobies in bondage: Buffy: 8 Giles: 4 Cordy: 5 Will: 3 Jenny: 1 Angel: 4 Oz: 1 Faith: 3 Joyce: 1 Wes: 1

Scoobies knocked out: no but Jonathan knocked unconscious by the beast. Buffy: 15 Giles: 10 Cordy: 6 Xander: 8 Will: 5 Jenny: 2 Angel: 6 Oz: 3 Faith: 1 Joyce: 2 Wes: 1

Kills: Buffy: 3 vamps for Buffy so 79 vamps, 26 demons, 6 monsters, 3 humans, 1 werewolf, 1 spirit warrior & a robot Giles: 5 vamps, 1 demon Cordy: 3 vamps, a demon Will: 4 vamps Angel: 3 vamps, 1 demon, 1 human Oz: 3 vamps, 1 zombie Faith: 16 vamps, 5 demons, 3 humans Xander: 5 vamps, 2 zombies, a demon, a demon Anya: a demon Jonathan; 2 vamps and 1 demon Riley; 11 vamps + 6 demons

Scoobies go evil: Giles: 1 Cordy: 1 Will: 2 Jenny: 1 Angel: 1 Oz: 1 Joyce: 1 Xander: 2

Alternate scoobies: Buffy: 6 Giles: 3 Cordy: 1 Will: 2 Jenny: 2 Angel: 3 Oz: 2 Joyce: 2 Xander: 3

Recurring characters killed: no but for a moment you really think Tara might go the same way as Jenny Calender Jesse, Flutie, Jenny, Kendra, Larry, Snyder, Professor Walsh

Total number of scoobies: 7 Giles, Xander, Willow, Buffy, Anya, Spike, Riley

Xander demon magnet: 5 Preying Mantis Lady, Inca Mummy Girl, Drusilla, VampWillow, Anya (arguably Buffy & Faith with their demon essences?)

Scoobies shot: Giles: 2 Angel: 3 Oz: 4

Notches on Scooby bedpost: Giles: 2; Joyce & Olivia, possibly Jenny Cordy: 1? Buffy: 3; Angel, Parker, Riley Angel: 1;Buffy Joyce: 1;Giles, possibly Ted Oz: 3; Groupie, Willow & Verucca Faith:2 ;Xander, Riley Xander: 2; Faith, Anya Willow: 2;Oz and Tara

Questions and observations; The first mention of the world without shrimp as far as I know? Of course it's actually Jonathon who works out Adam's weakness although surely if you cut his head off it would slow him down a great deal? Note Buffy know's how to make Jonathon's coffee. Less Adam in this ep and it's all the better for it. An ep much beloved of fanfic writers as whatever has gone on before Jonathon can always put it right. We also see Buffy show her strength, able to see beyond the illusion and show her latent power. Riley begins to see beyond the Initiative and is introduced to magic. How great is magic Jane's commentary? Now of course this marks the halfway point of Buffy, 72 down, 72 to go. Jonathon's twins are actually some of the Juggy Girls from The Man Show.

Marks out of 10; 8/10 I think, bordering on the marvellous

Hey what's going on?
jezabelejane8 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
OK Spike in the cemetery with the creepy small talk, what's that all about? I may just be a sucker and be totally in love with the idea that Spike the soulless dead thing fell in love with Buffy and loved her maybe more than Angel ever did, and therefore be looking for any signs of him caring about her in the show, but still. In this episode (supposedly) Spike HATES Buffy because she's the slayer, and he has expressed a dislike of her as a person. Prior to this, based on the comments he has made on her's and Angel's relationship I got the feeling that he finds the idea of slayer and vampire having any kind of relationship other than hating each other and being mortal enemies as wrong, just on a basic level of what is right and what is wrong as that being wrong, and gross I believe he has said things like "perverted" and "sick to my stomach" on the subject. Now in the cemetery his comments to her though might be worded threateningly have a sexual tone to them so like I asked before what's that all about? Why would he even use it as a joke? Is this part of the spell for Johnothan to once again play hero, or Spike screwing with her for Faith-as-Buffy teasing him at the Bronze in the last episode? Or perhaps just a sign that Drusilla is right in the next season's episode "Crush" that Spike loves the slayer, and if they were in kindergarten he would be pulling her hair, pushing her down, and riping the heads of her dolls

What a tedious episode...
m-4782630 June 2021
It's the first ever Buffy episode to get such a low rating from me. I'm all for off beat humor and self mockery. But this episode is failing at both. Like I said earlier, this second half of season, has such a huge quality drop, it's unbelievable. Everything after Hush, is either good or passable. And only two episodes really get my attention. A New Man, in which Ethan Rayne gave Giles his finest curse. Is the goofiest and funniest episode of season 4. One where we finally get to reflect on where the Giles character stand, after all these years mixing with a group of teenagers. And Who are you? The infamous Buffy/Faith body switch episode, that is tarnished lately, by crazy internet theories. When literally nothing was left open to incite such wild interpretations. The rest being about the Initiative nonsense, was the passable part. And even though the Maggie Walsh character made for an interesting vilain, it can't make up for how precarious her work is. Superstar, was meant to be a lighter episode, after all the intense drama. But it is also one you can skip entirely, and not miss anything. And when you risk yourself at it, you wish you hadn't. And the fact that it's getting higher ratings than Beer Bad or even, Where the Wild Things are, this season. Is pure madness.

I want to rate this a zero
moov_e_c_er31 March 2022
Worst episode ever. The show is of course total fiction of slayer, vampires and other demons. This show is not about one guys delusions of grander. This was far too unrealistic and doesn't follow regular flow of the rest of the show. I was so bored...
