Kirby takes over leading the squad in Vic's temporary absence. Cage is seriously wounded, and there's no communication with Rick, leaving Kirby on the spot, having to call the shots.
It's a critical situation, with the squad needed to hold its place in the line, and making matters worse, Vic is injured trying to get back to the squad, who must hold off a massive German attack. Soon they're pretty much surrounded, but Kirby thinks of a daring move, hiding in a farmhouse cellar, over the objections of his men, who wonder if he's ready for command.
It's a segment that's constant in building and sustaining tension, as it seems impossible for the little squad to survive all alone with Germans advancing. Kirby's plan succeeds in fooling the Germans, who don't search the cellar. Luckily a counterattack using heavy guns occurs, giving the squad a new chance to survive, including Vic who has been rescued by one of the men.
With the wire repaired, they finally get to contact Rick who gives new orders and our heroes save the day, and Kirby proving his mettle, in time for a very satisfying happy ending.
