However, acting on a tip from Joey Sanderson about the hijackers whereabouts, lrv is shot and seriously wounded during a stakeout. With one of the hijackers in the hospital and Irv's assailant still at large, Sanderson is questioned about the shooting, but the small-time hood denies any involvement beyond giving lrv the tip.
When lrv dies from his wounds, Tony feels responsible for his friend's death and becomes obsessed with finding his killer. After he is questioned again, Sanderson flees but, found hiding in an abandoned building, finally admits to being with a prostitute on the night of the shooting and is dropped as a suspect in the case. Meanwhile, after months of trying, Tony learns that Rachel is pregnant.
Tony puts out the word that the wounded hijacker, Wayne Patrick, has identified his partner, Knox, as lrv's killer. As a result, the triggerman responsible for lrv's death disguises himself as a doctor and infiltrates the hospital in order to silence his partner. Finally, after gaining access to Patrick's room, Knox is arrested for Irv's murder.
