Meanwaring is deeply disappointed by his men's uncivilized behavior: running him over to the exit while he stands for the national anthem after the movie and again to leave the bus before the pub closes. After a patriotic respect drill, heavy stout, sausages and cheddar dinner concocted with Wilson and Jones as alternative to a hopeless peace-offering to his wife upsets his digestion. While sleeping under her in the shelter, he then dreams being Napoleon, the movie's hero, at Waterloo, facing adversity with dignity.
