- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Oh, Miss Ellie!
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Pam, I'm, uh... I'm surprised you're here.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, why?
- [chuckles]
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Oh, Pam. Haven't you heard?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Heard what?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Uh...
- [looks down]
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Cliff is in Dallas Memorial Hospital.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: What happened?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: He, uh... he tried to take his own life.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: How is he?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: He's in a coma.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [closes her eyes, then looks at Bobby, who looks down] Why would he do something like that?
- [Miss Ellie looks down]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Did it have anything to do with J.R. and Sue Ellen?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: It was J.R.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'd better get to the hospital.
- Bobby Ewing: I'll go with you.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: No, Bobby. If J.R.'s involved, I don't think Mama would want to see a Ewing at the hospital. You understand?
- Bobby Ewing: [nods] Sure.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'll call you.
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Sue Ellen, I thought you'd left.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [shakes her head] I can't. I have to make sure that he's gonna be all right.
- Afton Cooper: Why? Do you really care if Cliff lives or dies?
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [shakes her head] Afton, I don't have to answer to you.
- Afton Cooper: [snaps] No, you don't. But you do have to answer to your own conscience. That's what's really bothering you, isn't it? You just wanna be able to go home believing that Cliff has only been destroyed... but he's not dead!
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [yells] Get out of my way!
- Afton Cooper: [hisses] You listen to me. I know Cliff thinks he's in love with you. He wanted you so badly he walked blindly into a trap J.R. set for him. But no more. You stay out of his life, Sue Ellen, you hear me? Cliff is my man until he throws me out. I love him! You don't know the meaning of the word. You're poison.
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Go home, Sue Ellen. This isn't helping Cliff.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [shakes her head] Not until I see him first.
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Not now.
- [resolutely sees to it that Sue Ellen backs off]
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Sit down, J.R.
- J.R. Ewing: Well, tight little family meeting we got here. Except for Ray. Where is he? Or is this only for those of us who have both Ewing and Southworth blood coursing through our veins?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: You know why Ray isn't here. You stole his voting shares.
- J.R. Ewing: [shakes his head] Mama, I did no such thing. I have a signed proxy locked upstairs in my room.
- Miss Ellie Ewing: I know all about it, J.R.
- J.R. Ewing: Is this little meeting to determine the fate of Ewing Oil?
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: No, it's over your fate, J.R.
- J.R. Ewing: Same thing, darling. Same thing.
- [pats her hand in most paternalistic way]
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: [inside hospital] Pam!
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Oh, Mother.
- [hugs her]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'm sorry. How is he?
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: [heads back, with Pamela in tow] No change. He's still in a coma.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Why would Cliff try to kill himself?
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Why? For the same reason that his father finally succeeded in drinking himself to death. The Ewings.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Mother, Cliff's fight was with J.R.,not the whole Ewing family.
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Pam, I know you're married to a Ewing, but that shouldn't blind you to the kind of people they are. Digger Barnes was in love with Ellie.
- [nods]
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: So was Jock Ewing. Two men in love with the same woman. It happens all the time. But when one of the men is a Ewing, he iisnt content to win the woman fair and square. He has to destroy his rival at the same time.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: That's ancient history.
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Is it? Well, history has a way of repeating itself. This time, the triangle is Cliff, Sue Ellen and J.R. And Cliff may be dying. I told Ellie this morning that I am gonna break the Ewings. I have the money and the power to do it. My family will not suffer at their hands ever again.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [eyes flaring] Mother, would you stop It! If Bobby has his way,
- [shakes her head]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: J.R. is out of Ewing Oil already. You can put that all behind you! The important thing is that Cliff gets well.
- [Rebecca takes pause]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'd like to see my brother now.
- [walks off]
- Jordan Lee: [at Cattlemen's Club] Oh, I'm sorry, I'm forgetting my manners. This is Marilee Stone.
- Holly Harwood: Of course. How are you, Mrs. Stone?
- Marilee Stone: Couldn't be better, Holly.
- Jordan Lee: And this is Bobby Ewing.
- [to Holly:]
- Jordan Lee: You and he have lots in common. He just took over as president of his company too.
- Bobby Ewing: [smiles, shakes her hand] How do you do?
- Holly Harwood: [smiles] Nice to meet you, Bobby. But I thought your brother J.R. was president of Ewing Oil.
- Marilee Stone: [smiles] Not anymore. J.R. took a sudden early retirement.
- Holly Harwood: Oh.
- [last lines]
- Holly Harwood: [at another club] What do you say? Do we have a deal?
- J.R. Ewing: Well, that's a very tempting offer, especially coming from such a lovely young lady.
- Holly Harwood: It's a dynamite offer... and you know it. You're out of Ewing Oil. I don't know a damn thing about running an oil company.
- J.R. Ewing: That's very bright.
- Holly Harwood: And I'm bright enough to know what I don't know.
- J.R. Ewing: All right. I'll accept your offer. I'll run Harwood Oil for you on one condition. That I stay completely in the background. Nobody has to know of my involvement.
- Holly Harwood: Forever?
- J.R. Ewing: Till I say so. You continue to act as president. I'll give you all the moves. I don't want an office, and I certainly don't wanna meet in your office.
- Holly Harwood: Whatever you say.
- [shakes her head]
- Holly Harwood: What about money? Or do you have somebody take care of that for you?
- J.R. Ewing: [chuckles] Well, Holly, I think if you get to know me a little better, you'll find that I take care of just about everything. I don't want any money upfront. But I do want twenty-five percent ownership of Harwood Oil.
- Holly Harwood: [scoffs] Twenty-five percent? You don't come cheap, do you, J.R.?
- J.R. Ewing: You wouldn't want me if I did, would you?
- [she smiles]
- J.R. Ewing: Look at it this way, Holly. With me, you have seventy-five percent of a profitable business... and without me, you just might have a hundred percent of nothing.
- Holly Harwood: All right. Deal.
- [smiles]
- J.R. Ewing: That calls for a toast.
- [smiles]
- Holly Harwood: [clinks his glass with hers] To Harwood Oil. Someday it might be bigger and stronger than Ewing Oil.
- J.R. Ewing: [forces smile] You know, it just occurred to me I have only been out of work forty-eight hours.
- Holly Harwood: [raises her glass] To J.R. Ewing.
- [smiles]
- Holly Harwood: Back in power again.
- J.R. Ewing: [clinks her glass] As it should be.
- [chuckles]
