Attracted to a sun
Tweekums24 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode sees us back aboard Talyn where Crichton is questioning Crais about why he spared Aeryn's mother. While doing this Talyn starts getting drawn into a nearby sun and nothing the crew attempts to do can persuade him to turn around. As he gets closer a Vapour starts to be emitted which seems to affect both Talyn and the crew; Aeryn and Crichton seem unable to keep their hands off each other, Rygel can't stop eating and Crais gets somewhat power crazed. Stark starts to hear a voice that he initially believes is Talyn but the mists eventually coalesce and take the form of a female alien called Sierjna. While Stark is talking to her another being appears on the bridge; this is Mu-Quillus; he claims to be there to warn them about the star because its radiation acts as a beacon that has already lured many leviathans to their death. Sierjna claims that Mu-Quillus captured her after luring the leviathan she was aboard into the sun and we soon learn that she is in fact dead! Whichever one of them is telling the truth they are still in danger as nobody is can control Talyn; at least until an unexpected person forms a link with him.

This was a decent episode that gave Stark a larger than usual role; it was fun to see him take centre stage as Paul Goddard puts in a great performance as this manic character. With the two guest characters there was some doubt as to who was the threat; Mu-Quillus certainly looked like a villain but frequently that is just a way draw attention from the real villainÂ… I won't spoil anything by saying if it was misdirection or not though. There isn't a huge amount of action but the special effects as the aliens materialise and disappear are good and it was good to see John and Aeryn getting closer even if it was due to the vapour affecting them.

Keeping the crew divided for so many episodes is a brave move by the shows creators; I certainly expected then to get back together after a couple of episodes. I think the separation works though as the smaller casts in each individual episode means that characters get more screen time in their episodes and we get to know them a bit better.
