JJ Pays Homage To The Twilight Zone!
zkonedog20 March 2018
I had never watched a single episode of "Felicity" before this one. I don't plan on watching another (it just isn't my kind of show). That being said, after recently discovering that this episode was an homage to The Twilight Zone from show-creator (and TZ superfan) J.J. Abrams, I had to give it a look. Despite not knowing any of the characters or their respective plot lines, it was still a lot of fun to witness the show and actors capture that TZ atmosphere.

I'm not going to give any sort of plot summary here (to be honest, a lot of the details escape me anyway as I haven't actually watched anything else of the show!), but I do have to say how truly cool it is for Abrams to pay homage to The Twilight Zone in this fashion. I mean, one would never think that a show like "Felicity" would be the right vehicle for this sort of thing, but it all "just works". Clothes, music, atmosphere, camera shots, mystery plot line...it's all in peak TZ form! There's no way that Abrams (at this point in his career) could have had any idea the heights he would later attain, so I very much respect and appreciate his drive and ability to honor his favorites in the "here and now" (1999, in this case).

Digging a little deeper into the episode, it is even directed by Lamont Johnson, who himself directed 8 episodes of the original TZ! This includes the iconic episode "Five Characters In Search of an Exit", which features prominently in "Help For The Lovelorn".

Like I said, this episode itself won't really turn me into a Felicity viewer, but it was extremely fun to see a masterfully creative show runner (in Abrams) pull this out of his magic bag (or mystery box, if you will) of tricks!
