Quotes

  • Dr. Richard Kimble : [Pounding a confession out of Fred Johnson]  You killed her, didn't you! You killed my wife, didn't you? Didn't you? DIDN'T YOU? You killed...!

Fred Johnson : Yeah, yeah, yeah! I killed her!

    Dr. Richard Kimble : Why?

Fred Johnson : 'Cause she wouldn't let me go! Liked to've clawed my eyes out! I didn't mean to hit her so hard.

[Kimble stands up, but Johnson seizes his gun]

Fred Johnson : Yeah, I killed her! Now I'm gonna kill YOU. Won't hafta worry about you again, no more!

[Johnson is, instead, shot dead by Lt. Gerard]

Lt. Philip Gerard : All right, you can relax now, Chandler. I just did your killing for you.

[Kimble climbs down to Gerard and Chandler]

Lt. Philip Gerard : You've had a great day, haven't you? I guess we both have. After all, for 4 years, now, we - BOTH of us - kept an innocent man in hell. But how are we going to end that? You can keep that man alive.

    [Chandler says nothing]

Lt. Philip Gerard : But you won't, will you?

  • Lt. Philip Gerard : All you can be sure of is that somebody bailed Fred Johnson out of jail.

Dr. Richard Kimble : That somebody's in Stafford, too.

Lt. Philip Gerard : You found that scrap of paper in that bail bondsman's office. Len Taft, your own brother-in-law. You really think he did it?

Dr. Richard Kimble : No. I think someone used his name. That someone wanted Johnson out of jail.

Lt. Philip Gerard : I'm sorry.

Dr. Richard Kimble : Twenty-four hours, Gerard. At the end of that time I'll come crawling to the police station, on the end of a leash if that's the way you want it.

Lt. Philip Gerard : As soon as this train reaches Stafford the word will be out. I've got to take you in.

Dr. Richard Kimble : The train makes three stops before it gets to Stafford. We can get off at any one of them, get a car, drive in. You've waited all these years, all I'm asking is twenty-four more hours.

[Clearly torn more and more by doubt about Kimble's guilt, Gerard glances at his watch for several moments]

Lt. Philip Gerard : We should be reaching South Bend by 8:30.

  • Dr. Richard Kimble : [Kimble is down from the amusement park tower after Johnson has fallen to his death after being shot by Gerard]  You saved my life. He confessed up there, for what it's worth.

Lt. Philip Gerard : I'm afraid you know what that's worth.

Lloyd Chandler : [overcome with guilt about not coming forward with information that could have saved Kimble, finally confesses]  Lieutenant, I saw that man, Fred Johnson, murder Helen Kimble!

Lt. Philip Gerard : [looks at Kimble in stunned disbelief, then turns to Chandler]  Are you willing to testify to that effect?

Lloyd Chandler : Yes. I will.

  • [Betsy Chandler answers her door and is shocked to see Richard Kimble and Lt. Gerard]

    Betsy Chandler : Richard!

[she turns away and walks into the living room as the two men follow]

Betsy Chandler : [dully, as Kimble and Gerard enter]  How are you, Richard?

Dr. Richard Kimble : Just fine, Betsy.

Lt. Philip Gerard : We'd like to talk to your husband, Mrs. Chandler.

Betsy Chandler : [some desperation in her voice]  Please help him. He went out to the amusement park.

Lt. Philip Gerard : [puzzled]  But that's been closed down for months now.

Betsy Chandler : [looking at Richard as she answers Gerard]  Yes. He went out there to kill the man who murdered your wife.

  • [Pounding a confession out of Fred Johnson]

Dr. Kimble : You killed her, didn't you! You killed my wife, didn't you? Didn't you? DIDN'T YOU? You killed...!

Johnson : Yeah, yeah, yeah! I killed her!

Johnson : 'Cause she wouldn't let me go! Liked to've clawed my eyes out! I didn't mean to hit her so hard.

[Kimble stands up, but Johnson seizes his gun]

Johnson : Yeah, I killed her! Now I'm gonna kill YOU. Won't hafta worry about you again, no more!

[But Johnson is, instead, shot dead by Lt. Gerard]

Lt. Gerard : All right, you can relax now, Chandler. I just did your killing for you.

[Kimble climbs down to Gerard and Chandler]

Lt. Gerard : You've had a great day, haven't you? I guess we both have. After all, for 4 years, now, we - BOTH of us - kept an innocent man in hell. But how are we going to end that? You can keep that man alive.

Lloyd Chandler : Lieutenant, I saw that man, Fred Johnson, murder Helen Kimble.

Lt. Gerard : Are you willing to testify to that effect?

Lloyd Chandler : Yes. I will.

  • [Kimble has cornered Fred Johnson at gunpoint atop an aerial ride at the Stafford Amusement Park]

Dr. Kimble : All right, we're going back.

Johnson : You won't shoot me, you need me alive!

  • [first lines]

[In the dead of night, Kimble and Gerard are handcuffed together on a train bound for Stafford, Indiana. Kimble stares pensively out the window, contemplating his fate, and Gerard tries to busy himself reading the newspaper. Gerard takes off his glasses and rubs his eyes in exhaustion]

Narrator : A man may travel many roads, and one day find his way home again. But for Richard Kimble, this road is not of his choosing and this day has come too soon. Two men, traveling together, bound by links of steel, and the memory of a senseless murder committed years before. Two men, one of whom has finally caught his elusive quarry.

Lt. Philip Gerard : Six more hours.

Dr. Richard Kimble : There's no point in asking you again, is there?

Lt. Philip Gerard : No, I'm afraid not.

Dr. Richard Kimble : I don't need three days, just twenty-four hours... that's all.

Lt. Philip Gerard : All I can give you is the same promise I made when you agreed to waive extradition... I'll keep the story of your arrest out of the papers. Anyway, I doubt your one-armed man is even in Stafford.

Dr. Richard Kimble : No, Johnon's in Stafford. I know that.

Lt. Philip Gerard : All you can be sure of is that someone paid three thousand dollars to bail him out of jail.

Dr. Richard Kimble : That someone's in Stafford, too.

Lt. Philip Gerard : You found that scrap of paper in the bail bondsman's office. Just said, "Len Taft, Stafford." Your own brother-in-law. Now do you really think that he put up the money?

Dr. Richard Kimble : No, I think someone used his name. And that someone wanted Johnson out of jail.

Lt. Philip Gerard : There's nothing I can do.

Dr. Richard Kimble : Twenty-four hours, Gerard! At the end of that time, I'll crawl into the police station... on the end of a leash, if that's the way you want it. You've waited five years, all I'm asking for is twenty-four more hours!

Lt. Philip Gerard : [Gerard glances at his watch, torn between his doubts about Kimble's guilt and his duty to uphold the law]  We ought to be getting into South Bend about 8:30.

  • Dr. Richard Kimble : [to Taft]  The one-armed man was arrested in Los Angeles.

    Leonard Taft : I know.

Dr. Richard Kimble : The money came from here... from Stafford.

Leonard Taft : Now who would do a thing like that?

Dr. Richard Kimble : Someone who gave his name as Leonard Taft.

Leonard Taft : I see... I see. You think that *I* put up the money, Richard?

Dr. Richard Kimble : I don't know... maybe you thought it was a way I could get to him.

Leonard Taft : Now that would be a pretty foolish thing to do, wouldn't it?

Dr. Richard Kimble : Yeah. It would.

Leonard Taft : [to Gerard]  What do you say, Lieutenant?

Lt. Philip Gerard : Whoever bailed Fred Johnson out of jail, obviously didn't want him to talk. I think you do.

    Leonard Taft : Right.

Lt. Philip Gerard : Anyway, if you had dome something so misguided, I don't think you'd have used your name.

Leonard Taft : All right, now here's something else for you gentlemen... this morning Donna got a call from a man who said that *I* was in the house that evening.

Lt. Philip Gerard : Could there have been someone else at the house?

    Dr. Richard Kimble : I don't know.

Leonard Taft : Listen, we thought it was some kind of prank, some kind of crank calling.

Lt. Philip Gerard : It could still be a prank.

Leonard Taft : She called me at the office, and said she was going to teach him a lesson, that I *would* meet him there.

    Lt. Philip Gerard : Where?

Leonard Taft : We thought it was a joke, I was on three other calls, and... Dick, I just don't remember.

Lt. Philip Gerard : Well, if it *is* the one-armed man he could be there right now!

Leonard Taft : [glancing at his watch]  She'll be home any minute.
