72 Hours (#5.19)

Warning: Spoilers
Rose gets a letter that a blood transfusion she received several years ago may contain HIV blood. She goes for a test, but the doctor tells her it will take about 72 hours to get the results. Rose is worried and anxious and the whole house goes through different issues regarding HIV problem.

Not a very funny episode, but a great one to raise awareness about HIV. They go through issues such as unreasonable alienation of victims when Sophia doesn't want to use the same cup and Rose and also how one can get it in very different ways when nobody deserves to have it as Rose wonders why she is in danger after an operation while Blanche doesn't have it when she has lots of sex.

Why does Dorothy always get picked on?

Warning: Spoilers
Rose feels she must use a pseudonym when she has to go to the hospital to get an HIV test became a procedure she had a while back might have utilized tainted blood. So whose name does she pick? Dorothy's of course. In the late 1980's and early 1990's, there were certainly issues for those being tested, but it's still not really believable that in a hospital, they wouldn't have exact records. Nevertheless, this is an important episode at a time when a diagnosis of HIV could have a major impact on a person's livelihood outside of being treated.

Rose acts hysterical over the three day waiting period, Sophia is nervous about drinking out of the same cup, and Blanche uses her own sexual history to try to comfort Rose. But Blanche uses this to try to comfort Rose in regards to how Rose uses her judgment against Blanche while comparing their lifestyles. The "Designing Women" episode, "Killing all the right people", is a better episode dealing with the same subject, but this episode is a close second.
