A tale of a fabulous teacher.

Warning: Spoilers
We find out in this episode that Dorothy likes a certain kind of exotic mushroom (changing a signature on her student's cast) and that she has very high standards when it comes to the principles of teaching. The episode deals with a star football player failing in Dorothy's English class and her decision not to pass him has him not able to play in the big game. She sticks to her guns even though the school principal and coach get on her case and even gets several threats. Then Rose deals in a not well-developed plot line about her dentist whom she thinks violated her while she was under anesthesia. The lighter plot line stands out more than the heavy, socially referenced plot line, something that on other sitcoms of the era such as "Designing Women" and "Murphy Brown" would have gotten priority treatment. Bea stands out here, once again showing that she should not have just been a substitute teacher, but a career teacher with a regular gig.

Warning: Spoilers
Dorothy will fail the high school football star and he will not be able to play in the game and this upsets many, but Dorothy wants to stand to her principles. And Rose goes to a dentist and when she is under anesthetics she thinks he touched her breasts. She is not sure if she should confront him.

A great episode. My rating isn't about originality of plot. I heard this story many times (although to be fair those shows were filmed after Golden Girls). But the episode is just perfectly written and has so much great humor! The scene of Blanche actin like a psychologist, the priest talking to Dorothy about Kevin, the dead fish, etc. Absolutely great

TLM references...maybe
atomicseasoning14 January 2008
This episode aired in October of 1990, about a year after the Disney movie "The Little Mermaid" which guest star Christopher Barnes had done the voice of Prince Eric in, was released, and there are vague references to the film in this episode (or at least interesting coincidences)

Chris' character "Kevin Kelly"

  • Liked Minneaoplis because that's where Prince is from.

  • Played on the football team for St. Sebastian HS.

  • Dorothy's threat was "If Kevin Kelly doesn't play in Saturday's game, Dorothy Z. will sleep with the fishes under the sea ..."

  • After "Kevin" broke his leg, Dororthy said tutoring him was like "shooting fish in a barrel."
