Play Mimi For Me.
simest11 July 2020
Mimi Rogers steals the show here as a psychotic young woman besotted with Jonathan after a chance encounter. Initial infatuation quickly descends into obsession as she begins bombarding his office with phone calls, gifts and dogging his footsteps in full stalker mode.

Anyone who happens to get in the way or inadvertently frustrate Rogers' pursuit becomes a target and this of course makes Jennifer her enemy number one. As the bodies begin to mount, Jonathan suspects what might be happening and teams up with the police to self-investigate by arranging a date with his deadly admirer.

While the episode appeared a few years ahead of Fatal Attraction, it still bears a heavy influence from Play Misty For Me which covered the same theme just over a decade earlier. Wisely, the episode is devoid of the goofy humour that frequently characterizes the show and this enables the suspense to build without obstruction and there are several tense, standout moments.

We do end up with the familiar Jennifer-in-peril scenario toward the end (and I'm not sure why anyone who has barricaded themselves from danger would then choose to un-barricade themself) but even this is redeemed largely by the final moment, which is both unexpected, sad, yet very moving and provides as good a wrap-up to the story as anyone could expect.

Rogers is terrific here. Seductive and clearly unhinged, her scarlet lipstick, fingernails and garments are a clever backdrop to her knife-wielding antics. There is also a child-like innocence to her on occasion - even apologising to a victim at one point.

This one is definitely a change of pace for the series and could have ended up a complete misfire if handled in the familiar style of the show. As it stands, it is one of the must-see episodes.

We've Got a Psychopath on our Hands

This one is so well-done. One of the best in suspense, creativity, writing, direction, sound editing, the works. Whatever creative snafus they were going thru this season, this episode was a diamond. Mimi Rogers plays a nutjob stalker that believes she has a relationship with Jonathan after a random encounter in a restaurant. She is absolutely fabulous in this role. Eventually, everyone remotely involved with Jonathan becomes a purposeful interloper between her and him. Unfortunately, Jonathan's new secretary, is played by the very good Jill Andre. I say unfortunately, because we won't be seeing her a second time. I am happy to report, however, that at least she used her seat belt. BLOOPER ALERT --> About 29 minutes in, Stefanie corrects her stride to make it easier to walk while holding RJ's arm. Lyman Ward stops by for his second of four stints as Lt. Draper, and he's actually really good. He's the straightest cop they've had as a B-character so far. Mimi plays crazy stalker very well, and whomever dressed both Mimi and anything remotely connected to her in red did a fabulous job. Red lipstick, red clothes, red bed linens, a zillion lit red candles, bleeding, red, red, rare prime rib, red wine, red nail polish. This is also the rare episode where we see someone smoking a real cigarette. So weird to see such a thing after all these years. Shows that while H2H stands up to time quite well, things like this bring you back to the early '80's quickly. The climactic sequence at the end is unbelievably good, especially Stefanie and Mimi. Big kudos to Art Directors Ross Bellah and James J. Agazzi, costumers Grady Hunt and Diana Reynolds, set decorators Audrey Blasdel-Goddard and James I. Colburn, and especially Director Karen Arthur. Perfection.

Easily one of the best H 2 H episodes of the series

Warning: Spoilers
I have seen every H 2 H episode at least 3 times and I have always felt this one stood apart. It's not like most of the other episodes which, although entertaining, are usually preposterous. This one really has you on the edge of your seat. No goofy music...no beds coasting down the highway. Just suspense. It really creeped me out how nuts the character played by Mimi Rogers acts...I mean, the viewer is genuinely left feeling she is psychotic. The ending is unexpected, if not a bit touching. This gem was well ahead of its time about 4 years before the Fatal Attraction film, which had every man in America thinking twice about messing around....well done!
