Yet another clunker from season 12.
planktonrules8 June 2014
"A Bird in the Hand" is yet another awful episode from season 12 of "Hawaii Five-O". This is because by seasons 11 and 12, the series had more than run its course and the plot started getting awfully silly or stale. While "A Bird in the Hand" was not 100% awful, it was a remake of a season 9 show, "Double Exposure". So, it certainly lacks a lot when it comes to originality but at least it isn't quite as stupid as many of the shows....small consolation that this is.

The show begins with a small group of tourists on a bird watching expedition. Unbeknownst to the group, they're taking pictures near the hideout of Mr. Del Vecchi (John Dehner). Del Vecchi faked his own death some time ago and is planning on a BIG score in smuggled gold. So, just to make certain none of the tourists took pictures of him by mistake, he has his goons arrange for accidents for everyone--making their deaths look normal. After a while, a pattern clearly has emerged and only a dope would think the deaths were all accidents. So, McGarrett eventually do what any good cops would do in a situation like this-- enter the thugs' hideout without backup and without a clear plan. And, like a badly written show, it all works out just fine! Then, oddly, McGarrett waxes poetic for no reason whatsoever!!

All in all, this is a pretty bad but not horrible show. For purists who want to see ALL of the shows, it's worth seeing--otherwise skip it. Also, note that IF gold was being smuggled in cans like they did in the show, the cans would be fabulously heavy and any idiot would quickly realize that there's far more than pineapple in the cans!

A recycled idea that doesn't make any sense
koohii17 September 2023
So, yeah, this is a recycled script from about 2-3 years ago, where someone accidentally takes a picture of some criminal, and rather than maintaining that low profile, the criminal idiotically chooses to draw attention to himself by killing everyone who was on the tour bus. If the baddie had been someone we already knew or respected or had at least heard about, it might have been more impressive. As it is, cliche's and coincidences abound. How did the baddies know where and when to find the surfer kid? And why the heck wasn't someone from 5-O there first thing in the morning to... i don't know... save his life? Or at least warn him? 5-O had a time and place to find the guy. Instead, they arrive about an hour late. Why? What was so important? Did someone have to finish a crossword puzzle? It's not like there was a Starbucks for them to have to stop for. No excuse offered.

The whole plot and scheme that the baddies have put together is lame. Only Kemo provides a touch of class. Interestingly, unlike McGarret, Kemo never has to chirp or screech the tires of his car just to show how dramatic the situation is.

Waste of episode indeed
bobforapples-4014611 December 2023
It does not even seem much like an ep of H50 at times. The main guest star is non-actress/ bad-radical-in-real-life Lara Parker, playing one of the marked targets. She more than just hogs up the scenery -- it actually seems at times like the whole ep is just a showcase for her. Strange thing is Parker runs the gamut in looks from being nice looking to moderately repulsive looking. She tried so hard in her totally unsuccessful attempts at acting to look like 50 different women and in this she tries to look like a couple different women all the same though she is not in disguise. The plot gets lost very much due to her horrible ego trip. Bet on that! Nothing can help from the regulars to and even the very talented fellow guest John Dehner--all can do very little to rescue the ep. When Parker ( who is now deceased in real life) is around everything totally falls apart she is so bad. A real bomb of an ep if you can even remember it is an ep!
