William Walker and Ed Holmes

Warning: Spoilers
"The Brute" opens with marauders led by Wolf (Lloyd Chester, second of four) conducting an ambush for supplies intended for a nearby settlement headed by Will Johnson (William Walker, last of three). Hawkeye and Chingachgook arrive too late to recover the supplies but help the two wounded men to the Johnson trading post, where Jack (Bob Vanstone, last of three) and Sam (Hugh Watson, third of six) are among the settlers discussing the next shipment. Suspicion falls upon Will's simple minded brother-in-law Tim (John Ringham, last of two), but the real culprit is actually Seth James (Ed Holmes, first of two), lying to Tim about Will's safety and pretending to be his friend, his intention to blame Tim for his own misdeeds. Hawkeye and Chingachgook perform their own ambush to convince Wolf that they're in the same crooked business. Jon Granik (first of three) is not in evidence as Red Knife.

Supplies to a settlement are being disrupted by raiders. This has led to anger and concern from the settlers who are running out of provisions.

Will Johnson who operates the trading post has a plan in progress. However his brother in law Tim might have placed this plan in jeopardy. An angry Tim attacks Will and Tim later finds out that someone has set him to take the blame for the provisions being stolen.

Luckily Hawkeye and Chingachgook are in hand to discover the actual culprits.

It ic clear by now that these are simple stories with a slight variation of the formula. Some crook will usually try to set someone else to take the fall as in this one.
