A woman in a house in France is listening to a live radio report of the Mille Miglia (Thousand Mile Road Race) from Italy in which her husband Cliff McGrath is competing, and currently leading. She looks up to see him standing in the doorway with a gun. He shoots her and escapes. Interpol is called in since McGrath is the obvious suspect as he will get his wife's money but, he is apparently at the wheel of his car hundreds of miles away. The checkpoints confirm this. Puzzled, Inspector Duval travels to Italy. In the meantime.the plot is revealed. McGrath's brother Mike and an accomplice are actually driving the car. McGrath intends to fly back to Italy and swap places at a pre-arranged point. The plan almost goes wrong when, playing his hunch, Duval issues a description of McGrath and he narrowly avoids arrest at Zurich airport. Stealing a fast car McGrath makes it to the rendevous, taking his place in the racer and shooting the accomplice. Duval arrives at the finishing line just in time to see McGrath win. He seems to have the perfect alibi but, Duval realises that cleanliness is not always next to godliness.
The simple storyline is given a wow factor by some exciting and well-filmed race scenes featuring magnificent 1950s sports cars roaring along mountain roads with hairpin bends and breathtaking scenery. No roll-bars or seatbelts for these guys. They just put their foot down and hang on to the steering wheel! A really good episode.
