The Father/Daughter dance...can there be any lower form of competition amongst teenagers? Well, yes, there can, I guess. But from a social status, this was pretty low. Will George and Judy be able to come out on top this year, or will they fail miserably...again. At school they reviewed the tapes of last year's competition. Marcia and her dad coming out the victors, while Judy and her dad were the losers. After that disgrace, Judy runs home and cries about it like the little girl she is, and her floating diary DiDi had little choice but to endure it. She simply hated Marcia (Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!), and decided not to put herself through such embarrassing torture again this year, and so, Judy feigns illness. The 48 hour flu. So Jane calls the doctor who diagnoses her over the phone and concludes it's Father/Daughter dance-aphobia...it didn't work last year either. After that, Jane lets it slip that George is taking dance lessons (now those of you who remember "Dance Time", George has more than his share of left feet, so you can understand why Judy's being such a drama queen.) Determined to find out where George is taking lessons, Judy enlists help from Elroy and Astro, who sniff him out. Seriously. They find him at a dance studio and, as you may have guessed, he's still incredibly lousy. Judy was disheartened.
Thanks to his ducking out of work to take the worthless dance lessons, George has fallen behind at the sprocket works and will have to work day and night to catch up, and since he cares more about his stupid job than his family, he informs Judy he will be unable to go to the dance with her. At first the teenage Jetson is ecstatic, but then George reveals a ringer....drum roll.....Grandpa Jetson! That's right, Montague's back and ready to cut those rugs to shreds. Judy's reaction: she throws a crying tantrum. Oh lord, and to top it off, she plans on getting Grandpa so tired out the next day he won't be able to take her dancing... okay number 1, has she ever met her grandfather? Does she recall his visit in Season 1? And does she know how many girls would kill to be able to dance with him? Two, just how bratty and selfish is Judy here? She's almost as bad as she was in her surprise birthday episode; anyway, her attempts prove futile. Proving once again that Montague Jetson is unstoppable. And so comes the night of the dance, and as predicted, Montague out-dances them all. Desperate to find an advantage, Marcia places a call to George, incognito, and claims Judy is being humiliated by her grandfather. Working faster than ever, George completes the orders and somehow gets a sprocket stuck around him. Ridiculous plight, yet it somehow increases his ability to dance. Who'd-a-thunk-it? So George arrives at the dance, and thanks to that sprocket around his torso, he and Judy win first prize.
This one had a lot of heart, even if somewhat mired by how self-centered and bratty Judy behaved the whole time. Most teenagers are I guess. Her conceited, selfish and reckless attitude does amount to a character trait, I guess, but would it have killed the writers to do at least one episode where Judy is compassionate and sympathetic? I can't sympathize with her here, or any other time she bitched and moaned about some plight in her life that was mediocre at best. She gets her chance in 1988's Rockin' With Judy Jetson. She's caring and kind to a small alien child and even sings her a sweet song about how "A house full of love is a home". I'd like to see that movie some day, but unfortunately it has become quite obscure. Getting back to this episode, it was nice seeing Montague again, as awesome as ever, and it also great seeing George man up to Spacely and take his daughter dancing no matter what the consequences. This one is okay, though mediocre like the rest of Season 3. It doesn't feel very original, as it rehashes a lot of the same gags from "Dance Time". Still, it's worth seeing.
