In criminal trials (in most, if not all states) witnesses (other than the defendant) are only allowed to be in the courtroom when they are testifying, not before because hearing other witnesses testimony could influence how they testify. Roger Cleary testifies and then the next witness is Steven Cleary, Roger's son, is testifying Roger Cleary and Steven's mother (who testified earlier) are sitting in the front row of the gallery.
