The story of the plight of big city teachers whose salaries were extremely low. Of course, we're dealing in a different era when students took the responsibility of being students.

When high school history teacher, Margaret Huggins, widowed, is forced to take a job as a waitress for added income, she immediately meets with scorn from her students who frequent the diner and order her around.

One of the good children comes into the diner and is respectful to his teacher.

Faced with the disrespect, Huggins tells the principal she is resigning but that good child helps organize the PTA into action. In a civics lesson, Huggins had taught the class about civic responsibility in voting and that's what the community comes together for- to petition the city council on behalf of teachers.

A wonderful, poignant subject appropriate to today's times as well.
