Brilliant scheming!

Nellie must have been such a fun character to act. This episode is one of her finest - master level head games, and she spares no-one! Bless that mean, bitter, lonely little girl.

Fantastic!!
cbest-8432311 July 2017
This episode would have kicked off season three better than "The Collection".and is ranked as one of my all time favorite episodes. This episode has some interesting facts....

1. Lots of scenes filmed on location....gave the episode a authentic look as opposed to in the studio..

2. Carrie seems to have disappeared???

3. The rider on the horse is clearly not Nellie.....looks much older

4. Why did Charles allow Laura to help Nellie with

homework...you would think he would be much more skeptical by now

of Nellie's intentions *talking machine etc

5. How could Doc Baker not pinpoint (no pun) that Nellie hadn't

recovered..

Overall, any episode with Nellie and Laura in the forefront is a must see. We really get to see how manipulative Nellie is on a large scale...The story had a great mix of tension and humor and is one that stands out as one of the best.....The wheelchair scene is one of the top 5 moments in Little House history!!!

Top 5 moments......1. Pa finding Laura at the top of the Mountain (Lord is my Shepherd) 2. Laura's first kiss (Sweet Sixteen) 3. Blowing up Walnut Grove (final) 4.The star scene in (Christmas at Plum Creek 5. Wheelchair scene (Bunny)

I don't know how to add a goof!

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of my favorite, yet hardest to watch, episodes. It's so well-acted, but Nelly and Harriet are just evil! Ugh! Really an absorbing episode, though. So I have a weird goof to expose:

At the end, when Nelly is throwing stuff around her room, she throws a horse statuette at framed embroidery of a doll on the wall. If you look to the bottom right of the embroidered doll, you'll see that it is dated '1980'. What's REALLY strange? This episode came out in 1976. I'm so confused.

Evilness!
mitchrmp13 April 2013
If ever you want to watch an episode where Nellie and Harriet are evil, this is the episode to watch. I don't think there is another episode that shows just how nasty these two can be!

After Laura gives Bunny to Laura in Christmas of Season 1, this is the first episode that even mentions Bunny. But Nellie's treatment isn't very good and she whips the horse. When the horse spooks with Nellie on it, she's injured. She claims that she can't feel her legs.

But before long, we realize that's not true. Nellie keeps pretending just so she can get everything she needs. She is extra nice to Nellie so she can hurt Laura by making her do all her homework and by keeping her and Jason from being friends.

Harriet orders Bunny shot, but Laura hides Bunny at her house. When Harriet finds out, she is very, very upset. Then Laura finds out the truth.

Probably one of the most classic and vengeful scenes of the entire episode, Laura gives Nellie a shove down a hill. It's quite funny. I must give this episode a ten for the final scene...CLASSIC!

Warning: Spoilers
I remember my Uncle had a little house on the prairie video tape with 2 episodes Bunny and the race. But on the tape they were not separate. It was a 90min episode just under the Title Bunny. So I'm going to review Bunny and the race as one episode. This is a good 90 min episode. Nellie mistreats her horse Bunny which we last saw in the season 1 Christmas episode. The horse runs of with her and goes right into a tree and injures Nellie. She was paralyzed for a moment but her feeling came back the same day. But she did not tell anyone. Mrs Oleson was a bi*ch as always and blamed Laura and the horse but not her Sweet Nellie. Laura feels guilty and when Nellie ask laura to help her with her schoolwork she accepts. But what Laura doesn't know is that Nellie is playing her. She is not as sick as she let's everyone believes. Nellie was a bigger Bit*ch as her mother in this episodes. She now has Laura right where she wants her.Laura is now falling behind on her school work bc Nellie makes Laura do all her homework as well. Laura finds out that Nellie is faking and........ Wait for it. Then comes this classic scene. Laura takes Nellie out onto the hill in her wheel chair calls Mrs oleson to pay attention and pushes Nellie of the hill with the wheelchair. It lands in the pond and Nellie stands up. And Mrs oleson falls over and say "its a miracle" classic classic Afterwards Nellie starts to wreck her room out of anger and she is as angry as hell for laura.in the meantime Mr oleson tells laura that she could have her horse back. A couple of days later laura starts to train her horse for the big annual race that's coming. This makes Nellie jelous so she throws a tantrum and ask for her horse back. Nels says her no. So she goes to her room and screams. Untilk Mrs olson gives in and tells her that she is going tobuy her a real race horse. No wonder Nellie is such a bi*#h the little brat gets everytihng she wants. Tune in to find out what happens. This is a good episode and it has a lot of funny parts.

Memorable scenes: Miss beadle:who's talking?" Laura:Nellie is just telling me why she gives you apples!" Nellie:"I am not" Miss beadle:"please both of you get back to work" Nellie:"I hate you laura" Laura:"I hope so". Lol classic.

Nellie:"hi Jason want to Ride on my horse" Jason:"no thanks" Nellie:"why. You are going to laura in galls again arnt you?" Jason:"well yes" Nellie:"I hate you" Jason:"have you been eating onions?". Classic

Willie:"who won" Nellie:"oh shut up". I was laughing so hard.

All in all this was a good episode and a lot of funny parts. Check it out.

Loved this episode

Warning: Spoilers
It sounds like labenji has a fetish of seeing little girls punished... Can we get their review removed for being creepy???

In general, this is a great episode. I was prepared for Laura to lose again and have Pa give her a lesson about how it's okay to lose as long as you did your best and worked hard (still a good lesson!). This felt like one of the few times someone did the right thing AND got the reward. But she still found a way to be generous and kind in the end without rubbing it in anyone's face. I like that Nels is starting to stand up to his family and to do the right thing out in the open instead of hiding it. He's a great character in this show.

Horse Sense?
ExplorerDS67891 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Remember Laura's horse Bunny? She traded it to Nels for a stove to give to her ma for Christmas in Season 1. Ever since, Bunny was the reluctant property of Nellie Oleson, but at least Laura got to see her every day, always bringing her an apple from the tree, but this often results in her being late for school. After class, Laura and Mary catch Nellie clumsily riding Bunny and whipping her with a riding crop for no real reason. Laura warned her to be gentle, but naturally Nellie wouldn't listen and so the horse took off, a frightened, screaming brat on its back. She hit a tree branch and suffered a nasty fall. Doc Baker diagnoses her as having a slight concussion, but Harriet became hysterical regardless. When Nellie came to, she swore she couldn't feel her legs and Doc using the old needle proved she was telling the truth. Right away, Harriet placed blame on this incident on Laura because Bunny used to belong to her and wanted the horse put down. Naturally Laura was even more upset and so she stole Bunny back, and rightfully so. The next day, Charles forced Laura to come to the mercantile with him so they could try to set things right. Laura was called to see Nellie, and seeing her in this state brought tears to the girl's eyes. She swore she'd do anything for Nellie, still feeling that the accident was her fault. All the wounded girl requested was that Laura bring her the school assignments she'll be missing from now on, so she won't fall behind. Laura was happy to do it. Oh, and if you really believe Nellie is a cripple, well, you obviously haven't been paying attention these past three years. The little brat was faking it, and she was about to play this simple town like a harpsichord.

While resting in her "sick bed", Nellie noticed Laura talking to Jason, a boy from school. Her secret crush. So when Laura brought up Nellie's homework, she put on a sob story about how she's in love with Jason and would be crushed if he set his sights on another girl, so Laura agreed not to talk to him anymore, and so she blew off Jason when they were supposed to go fishing. He found out why and swore he never felt anything for Nellie, but regardless, whatever friendship there was between he and Laura has now ended. She was a little young for him anyway. Having to wait on Nellie hand and foot out of her own guilt was starting to put a damper on the other aspects of Laura's life. She fell behind in chores as well as her own schoolwork, so as she was struggling, Nellie was living it up as a "cripple", sympathy, new dolls and a boatload of candy. Of course when Laura told her she was warned not to keep this up for her own sake, Nellie put on the dizzy routine and guilt tripped Laura into doing her homework for her again. Meanwhile, at Nels and Doc Baker's request, Charles fixed up an old wheelchair and they plopped Nellie right into it. Harriet rode out to the Ingallses' to thank him when she saw Laura with Bunny. The fat bitch demanded the horse be handed over, so Laura mounted and they took off. She rode to Nellie's house... why? She peeked in the window and saw her dancing with her new doll. Wow, she'd been tricked. Who'd-a-thunk it? So she offered to give Nellie a spin in her chair, and pushed the little brat up a steep hill...and here comes the good part, she pushed her down the other side! Nellie topped down the hill and took a header into the pond. Harriet was there as she stood up, claiming she could walk and it was a miracle...oy. Well I wish I could say Nellie broke her neck, but she'll be fine. So in the end, Laura got Bunny back and made amends with Jason, causing Nellie to tear apart her room, screaming "I hate you, Laura Ingalls." Oh shut up, Nellie. The rest of the town should be saying that about you!

This episode....oh boy, I gotta say...this is a real mixed bag. It's performed very well, directed very well, written okay, but man, if you hate Nellie Oleson or her mother, this is NOT for you. Hate isn't a strong enough to describe the feeling you'll get for those two, particularly Nellie. Up to now that little girl has been rotten, but this time...this one's the grand champion. If she were my daughter, I'd abandon her on a street corner and pretend she never existed. That's horrible I know, but the punishment fits the crime. Even referring to them as bitches isn't strong enough, nor is the C-word. It's THAT bad. What I'm trying to say is, Alison Arngrim was fantastic at portraying such a horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE child. Melissa Gilbert was great as Laura, a child who often tends to use her heart more than her brain. Katherine MacGregor was in fine form as Harriet, the worst parent in Minnesota. I wouldn't really recommend this one, it's tough to watch, it's frustrating, it will make you mad, make you sad, I'd recommend just skipping it. However, if you like Nellie THAT much, then give it a try, but don't say you weren't warned.

Enough Already, Laura is not a saint
labenji-1216320 June 2020
I can't take it anymore, I officially dislike the character of Laura Ingalls. She is a manipulative, spoiled self-centered little brat of a child whose parents just overlook everything she does. Laura does not know her place as a child, especially a child of the 19th century, she consistently inserts herself into the lives and happenings of adults, she commits crimes (breaking and entering, theft, embezzlement, lying and cheating), but everyone seems to overlook her behavior as "she means well" -- No she damn well doesn't, she just want her own way, all the time and she is only ever sorry when she's caught and is never punished for her behavior. How is it that even the mother knows her "place" in the marriage of this time period, not to question or argue with her husband's decisions, but not Laura, she just yells and disobeys him if she doesn't agree. Yes, Nellie is over the top mean, but Laura is no saint --- she's nice when she wants to be and sneaky, manipulative and disrespectful. But she's not an evil child, but I just wish Pa would punish her when necessary -- but at the end of the day, I prefer Nellie over Laura, at least you know what you're getting with Nellie.

Goof correction for Audramckean

The picture is dated 1920. Not 1980 as you stated. However, it's still incorrect for the era of this episode.
