- Charles Ingalls: [after pushing Mr. Applewood against the wall] You owe my wife a thank you. She asked me to be nice to you.
- [Charles snaps Applewood's stick in two, and storms off]
- Hannibal Applewood: I have seen the likes of you before. You want the children to toll the line, but you're afraid to discipline them! There must be order! There must be routine! There must be rules! And those rules must apply to all students! You cannot alter those rules, you cannot change order. I must have ORDER!
- Mary Ingalls: You say that again, and I'll slap your face!
- Nellie Oleson: You do and I'll pull your hair out by the roots!
- Laura Ingalls: I bet Nellie Olsen brings that new teacher an apple.
- Mary Ingalls: You're probably right.
- Laura Ingalls: Maybe he'll hate apples.
- [Both giggle]
- Harriet Oleson: I always find that the only thing harder to find in Walnut Grove than good food is intelligent talk.
- Harriet Oleson: Laura Ingalls is a troublemaker.
- Nels Oleson: Harriet!
- Harriet Oleson: I'm only stating a simple truth.
- Nels Oleson: I've always found her to be very pleasant and well behaved.
- Harriet Oleson: Well, you haven't been around her when she's up to her tricks! Isn't that so, children?
- Hannibal Applewood: [dejectedly walking towards the schoolhouse door after sealing his own fate during a school board meeting, pausing to take his hat, sounding defeated] My resignation will be on the desk in the morning.
- [exits schoolhouse]
