kapelusznik1824 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** Having been assigned to protect mobster Tommy "The Hatchet" Hatch, Whit Bissell, makes Let. Det. Frank Ballinger's, Lee Marvin, life a living hell. He'd rather put a bullet in his skull then protect Hatch from his fellow mobsters belonging to the "Big Ned" Kennedy mob who he in fact had knocked off. But like the saying goes It's a dirty and someone has to do it" and it's Frank Ballinger's who been picked to carry it out.

With Hatch knowing that he's to be protected by the police to be a witness against the mob, his people, in an upcoming state grand jury hearing he feels that he's invincible and able to do anything he wants with the Chicago PD as well as FBI fully committed in protecting his behind. And Tommy's behind sure needs a lot of protecting. It's later that Tommy got a call from his sister in law Molly Peters, Noreen Arnold, to leave his high rise apartment duplex and come up and see her for some fun & games. With Hatch rushing over to Molly pad and have some adult fun with her he doesn't realize what's there's waiting for him. Hot for both action and, his police protection doesn't cover it, booze Tommy Hatch runs straight into a trap that been set for him by the Kennedy Mob. And it's now up to the police and Let .Det. Ballinger, whom he slipped away from, to make sure that he stays alive and breathing.

***SPOILERS*** By now the cops got an eye witness to Hatch's murder of "Big Ned" Kennedy that could land him straight into the state electric chair. But it's his testimony that is needed to put a number of Tommy's mob associates away as well. And that's where Let. Det. Ballinger comes in to make sure that he stays alive long enough until he testifies against them in court.

A Great Example Of 'Film Noir'
ccthemovieman-117 February 2010
If you enjoy the "edgy" dialog in a film noir, with wisecracks and insults one after the other, you'll love this particular episode of "M Squad." It's full of them; very entertaining stuff!

Whit Bissell is a name I've learned to recognize by watching TV shows from the late 1950s, ones that are now on DVD. It seemed like Bissell popped up everywhere, especially on westerns, and he was almost always one of the bad guys. However, he played his share of decent guys, too. It seems hardly a TV show went by that you wouldn't Bissell doing a guest-acting spot.

In here, he's a strange guy, a crook ("Tommy Hatch") but one whom the police are after but the mobsters are after even more. They think he's a stoolie. This is all making "Tommy" a nervous wreck" because it seems everyone is out to get him. He's dying for police protection, and gets it, yet insults Ballinger all the time. Frank is not happy with this assignment. "One more day of guarding this jerk and, if they don't kill, I will," he says.

He tells Tommy he's done after one more day of babysitting him. Tommy doesn't believe him.

"Ha ha, do I look like a sap?"

"Let's not go into that one," replies Ballinger.

Is Tommy doomed to die, as he says he is? You'll have to watch to find out, but the ending is very good, too. This whole episode is great.

A First Rate Episode

M-SQUAD –The Palace Guard -1957

This is episode 14 of the 1957 to 1960 Crime series, M-SQUAD. The series ran for 117 episodes and features Lee Marvin as the headliner. Marvin is a Lt with the elite M-Squad unit of the Chicago Police.

Gangster Whit Bissell is grabbed up by the Police for a killing. The Police however do not have enough evidence to charge the man. Bissell gets a laugh out of this and tells the bulls to blow. That is till he finds out the mob wants him dead. They figure Bissell was only released because he turned informer.

He requests Police protection and the Police reluctantly give it. Police Lt Lee Marvin draws the assignment. Marvin soon grows tired of the detail but manages to foil several attempts on Bissell's life. At the same time the Detectives are trying to rustle up any witnesses to the murder Bissell committed.

Also in the mix, are a pair of showgirls, sisters Alix Talton and Noreen Arnold. Bissell is seeing one while putting the make on the other. The mob uses the one as bait to draw Bissell away from his Police protection. This of course leads to plenty of flying lead and several dead bodies.

There is plenty of action and violence in this stand up example of this great Police series.

Also in the cast are, Paul Newlan, William Boyett, Charles Tannen and Paul Bryar. Most should recall Boyett from his bit on the long running 60's and 70's cop show, ADAM-12.

Great looking episode with 7 time Oscar nominated, and 2 time winner, Ray Rennahan handling the cinematography.
