When I was a kid, everybody in my house loved every episode of MASH, and as an adult and father of three, everybody in my house loves every episode. I can't count how many times we've watched every single episode in order, from the first to the very last. We watch the Christmas episode in December every year, especially on Christmas Eve as we wrap presents through the night.
Except this episode. Watching every episode in order as we always do, this episode is so bizarre and out of place that we usually skip it and move onto the next one, Hawk's Nightmare. The few times I've tried to watch it myself to find out why I always skip it, I never make it more than about half-way.
We have no problems with other cultures and other ways of thinking -- my wife is Vietnamese and my siser-in-law is Korean. Most of the men in my family were in the Army, stationed in Viet Nam, South Korea, and the middle east.
Maybe that's the problem. The "exorcism" near the end is such a horri-bad display of a ceremony that visually and technically isn't even close to reality. It's painfully embarrassing like watching native Americans in a 50's western. Or like watching white people playing Asians in 60's movies, complete with modified "slant-eyes".
That being said, the first half of the episode is typical great-MASH, but it's not worth it to change it halfway through to avoid the pain in the second half.
