MacGyver in the Baseball Game

I dislike episodes of this show where MacGyver blunders into the story. Here, he just happens to be there when some dumb kid picks the worst time in the world to steal baseball cards from the Coltons. Too bad the brothers aren't there. I'd like to see them do the sawn-off shotgun biz with the card-fakers.

When I was a boy we put baseball cards in our bicycle spokes to make the sound like motorcycles. They never really did, but when I was a boy we had imaginations.

Later, sports cards became big business. About the time this episode came out a good friend of mine was putting himself through college with sports cards *including a Michael Jordan rookie card*.

Anyway, Kent McCord plays a washed up pitcher on the string to gamblers, whose daughter is trying to bust up a counterfeit card racket.

It sounds frivolous, but back then cards were big money.

Special guest appearance by non-actor Reggie Jackson, who was better on " The Love Boat." Not an exciting episode bit it gives Richard Dean Anderson a chance to play his nerd character.

Bleh.

In another dimension, perhaps MacGyver is an avid baseball fan instead of hockey. In this one, it's a little weird seeing him appear in a baseball-centric episode, if only because it's not the sport he plays and loves. I even chuckled towards the end of the episode, when Mac throws a pitch as I imagined it not getting anywhere close to its target since Mac is not a baseball player.

This is one of those episodes where the motivations of various characters is either illogical or non-existent. The bad guys are killers not because they're really bad people, but because the script needs them to be "dangerous" in order to create tension. Other characters are sort of just aimlessly wandering around through the story, going through motions for "reasons." Even Mac seems uninterested in this one.

It's not nearly the worst episode, but it's really boring and entirely skippable.
