A top notch penultimate Season 1 episode
DVD_Connoisseur8 October 2018
Featuring the beautiful Erin "Wilma Deering" Gray, this is a top drawer Season 1 episode of "Magnum P.I." Gray plays the professional security expert "Digger" Doyle who's hired to ensure the Masters' estate is secure enough to prevent an attack by parties unknown, intent on stealing the tapes for Robin's new book.

The legendary Orson Welles voices the (largely unseen) bestselling novelist and international playboy, Robin Masters.

Action packed, amusing and containing stunning Hawaiian scenery, this is a very entertaining episode. With only one episode left in this first season of the show, "Magnum P.I." is now hitting new heights of quality and standing head, shoulders and moustache above other similar television shows of the time.

9 out of 10. Excellent.

Introducing the lovely J. "Digger" Doyle...
Jon-nel4 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The beautiful, Honolulu-born Erin Gray plays security expert J. Digger Doyle, who is hired to test the security of the Masters estate after Robin receives a death threat. Once again Magnum allows the security of Robin's Nest to be breached by a manipulating woman. Digger takes her job very seriously, even at the expense of poor Higgins.

This episode was at one time considered as a possible pilot for Erin Gray into her own spin off series; however it never materialized. Early scenes have her running on the beach and in various swimsuits, showing that she is indeed in fine physical form. She is as lovely to look at here as ever and the Hawaii setting allowed her to shine.

Throughout we are afforded very brief glimpses of Robin from aside or afar, accompanied by the deep baritones of Orson Welles, as he dictates his latest novel from Rolls Royce or Learjet.

At one point Magnum and Digger don tiger-camouflage jungle fatigues and climb the breathtaking "Stairway to Heaven," the Haiku Ladder hike in windward Oahu, in order to retrieve a kidnapped Higgins.

There is a shootout with some determined security experts for Laseronics, who want to stop Robin from publishing his latest novel. Rick is ready with his MAC-10 a-blazing, automatic gunfire is exchanged, TC's chopper is once again hit, and law enforcement in the state of Hawaii ceases to exist momentarily. It's not clear if anyone was hit but somehow everything is resolved because we find Magnum and Digger together horizontal on the living room couch. So all's well that ends well.

As the series goes I found this to be a well-paced, enjoyable, above-average episode featuring Erin Gray, who is very easy on the eyes. 8/10.

Higgins is no dummy
safenoe17 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Erin Gray, who was famous for Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, guest starred in this first episode series. It's a lot of fun, and certainly Erin was very fit and stunning. Anyway, I understand from the Magnum Mania site that this episode was a possible spin-off series for J. "Digger" Doyle, but not to be.

The scene at the end where Magnum carries Higgins on his back up the famous Haiku Stairs is somewhat hilarious because it's clear that Magnum is carrying a stuffed mannequin that's supposed to look like Higgins!

Anyway, this episode ensured the Haiku Stairs exploded in popularity amongst the public.

Erin Gray and Jacquelyn Ray
dd-6605614 April 2020
What redblooded American Male worth his salt still doesn't pant when Erin Gray walks or talks? Because of her, Catherine Bach and Heather Thomas I got through puberty. No shame! In any case this is another season 1 goody from Magnum P I. I remember Jacquelyn Ray always as an actress that was always filmed getting in or setting in cars. Scarecrow & Mrs. King, Mike Hammer, Spencer for Hire, Rip Tide, Jake and The Fat Man. Even Columbo and Murder She Wrote. I dunno what it was or is but in everything I ever saw her in she was either getting in a car, out of a car or sitting in a car. And always played a royal pain in the koos koos! And Hollywood loved this lady in a car! And I had no idea that she was Tom Selleck's wife at the time of this series. And that they have a near 60 year old son together named Kevin Selleck also an actor. WOW.

Very Poor

Warning: Spoilers
Magnum meets Wilma Deering security expert ( when he meets her, he does not know that ), in Rick's club. They are leaving together and she has the keys to Robin Masters Ferrari. Magnum...then detective does not ask the obvious question, like where did you get the car from. They turn up at Master's house. Higgin's is totally unaware that the Ferrari is missing. Magnum asks Higging is it ok for the woman with Robin's car to look around the house?????? She then pulss out a gun and calls Robin from his private phone line, and revealing that she is s security expert. This was the penultimate to season 1. Very poor writing.
