The Legend of Adam Clark
pensman18 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Is Moberly (John Dehner) the famous outlaw Adam Clark or just the broken down sick old man he appears to be. Shenandoah picks up a young kid, Tommy, who wants to move up from juvenile delinquent to real outlaw by finding and joining up with Clark. The old man seems to know the tricks an outlaw should know but insists he is just who he appears.

While bedding down for the night, the three are jumped by a couple of bounty hunters, Coll and Pendleton. After the two slap Moberly around, they decide to move on figuring the real Clark wouldn't allow himself to treated so.

Moberly plays it cagey and suggests Shenandoah might not want to know who he is; but he does take an interest in the kid and the kid's romantic idea of what the life of an outlaw is like.

Pendleton and Coll head for Clark's old town which is now a ghost town. When Shenandoah and Moberly and Tommy ride into the town, Pendleton and Coll figure Moberly is Clark and he's still worth $5,000 dead or alive. When Pendleton and Coll start shooting, Moberly tells Shenandoah to head for the hotel. Moberly goes to a hiding place and starts pulling out weapons and ammo hidden under a board. It's clear Moberly is Clark but the old man who knows he is dying puts on a show of cowardice which disabuses Tommy of the idea of outlaw as hero.

Shenandoah kills the two bounty hunters but does Clark know who he is. Just before he dies, Clark says he never saw Shenandoah before. But the old outlaw's act has had the desired effect on Tommy.

Not an episode for surprises but a good cast and Dehner doesn't disappoint. Too bad this series made it for just a season, but it was a Western in a time when Westerns were beginning to lose popularity. Horton wanted to strike out from being one of a company on Wagon Train and he was popular enough to be given his own show. A Man Called Shenandoah was a good show and Horton was good but his show was up against The Andy Griffith Show and The Andy Williams Show. In an age when there was one TV in the house, Mom wanted Andy Williams.
