The relationship between Vaughn and Montalban is great--tongue-in-cheek, with unexpected and clever dialogue by Robert Towne, who later wrote 'Chinatown'. The black and white photography helps create the Cold War atmosphere of Eastern European intrigue. The nice added touch of innocent June Lockhart with her troop of teenagers getting involved with the spy vs. spy scenario gives this episode some heart. I would pick this episode for any newcomers to the series, which became a phenomenon of the mid- sixties, and it started from this first season, all in black and white.

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Dove Affair - 1964

This is the 12th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in B/W with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

Agent Vaughn is sent to an Eastern Bloc country that THRUSH is trying to take over. He is to steal a medal from the body of the just passed leader. He does this, and escapes into the night. The Police however soon corner him. Out of the fog comes Ricardo Montalban, Montalban is an officer in the State Secret Police. He takes charge of Vaughn but then tries to kill him.

The whole story revolves about Vaughn and Montalban playing cat and mouse games as each tries to recover the Dove shaped medal. Montalban wants the medal because there is secret information on the THRUSH plot to take over the country. Vaughn of course wants the same info. Complicating matters is a group of young American students led by, June Lockhart.

After several rip roaring early episodes, the writers have hit a speed bump with this one. The talents of the actors are wasted in this mish-mash of an episode. One has to expect the odd hic-up in any series and this one is just that.
