Mary has a tonsil grow back and must have surgery to remove it. Since it is usually a kid problem, she is embarrassed to tell her co-workers. Lou gets it out of her and is quite critical. When she goes to the hospital, Rhoda substitutes a sexy little nightgown for her more conservative one. This is one of those instances where the producers played on Mary Tyler Moore's attractiveness for effect. It's a little thing but she was quite striking. When she meets her roommate, Loretta (played by Pat Carrol whom I remember from game shows), the woman is incredibly hostile to her. Mary, in her perky way, tries to befriend her but to no avail. At times this is funny, but ultimately, I found it to be a little sad. Another thing. I've had kids with tonsils removed as well as my own experience. Mary recovered awfully fast. It's not like that for a few days.
