Richard Schaal again
Rrrobert26 June 2019
Richard Schaal plays his third character in the series, and it is only season 1. I was confused at first but he now plays Paul, the brother of Howard. Howard is unseen here but was a guest at Mary's first disastrous party at the start of the series. (In between playing Howard and Paul, Schaal did a bit, in full makeup, as Chuckles the Clown.)

The first of the true 'dating' episodes of the series, and I never really liked the dating episodes. Mary usually goes all mushy and the regular cast members change into support players whose only function is to provide gushing approval of Mary's new beau. The episode ending implies they are happy together, but usually we never see or hear about the boyfriend ever again.

This episode becomes a bit of a shaggy dog story as Paul and Mary visit his parents who idolise Howard and dismiss Paul and think Mary and Howard are still dating. Recognisable actors Mary Jackson and Henry Jones are good as the obnoxious parents. Mary gets very gooey over Paul but he doesn't seem that attractive.

Sibling Rivalry
Hitchcoc31 January 2017
Richard Schaal returns, playing the brother of the character he played in an earlier episode. His name is Paul Arnel and his brother is the boorish Howard. He is a political writer for a upward moving candidate. Howard is a maker of novelties and is the apple of his parents' eyes. They actually think that he and Mary are engaged and that there will be a wedding soon. There are uncomfortable moments in the senior Arnell's house because Howard has received all the attention and Paul's job is seen as less than important. This i Paul and Mary's first date and the parents are going to Europe, so their goodbye visit is not much fun. Mary is nearly referred to as a harlot. This is an OK episode.

Richard Schaal version 2.0

Howard and paul. No mention they are identical.

"Howard's Girl" is a very strange episode. This is because in this show, Paul Arnell (Richard Schaal) is Mary's new boyfriend...and Schaal already appeared on the show in the second episode as Howard Arnell...Paul's brother. So here's why it's so weird...Richard Schaal plays BOTH characters and both are NOT supposed to be identical twins. This must have confused a few people, that's for sure. It also must have felt funny to Valerie Harper (Rhoda), as Schaal was her real life husband at the time! Confusing!

The episode begins with Mary telling Rhoda and Murray that she was interested in Paul Arnell, as she's seen him a few times recently about a congressman he's working for and they've hit it off. She hopes he'll ask her out...and he does. However, when he brings her home, his parents act as if Mary is Howard's girlfriend and they're looking forward to a wedding...even though she only went out with him a few times and prefers Paul. Talk about awkward.

While this isn't a bad episode, it sure is confusing (as I talked about above). It's interesting and worth seeing...but strange.
