Cops selling out cops
Tweekums15 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode opens with Crockett and Tubbs joining a couple of young up and coming detectives on what should be a routine arrest; however when they try to enter the apartment there is an explosion and one of the young cops doesn't make it. It turns out this isn't the first time recently that cops have been ambushed while serving warrants... clearly there is a leak in the system. Having survived one ambush Tubbs has no intention of being in another so refuses to work until the leak is plugged; this leads to him being suspended and he promptly quits with the intention of returning to New York. He then has a bit of a melt down when he can't immediately get the pay he is owed and ends up being arrested! Out of a job and without money he finds himself being approached by the leak, an officer called Glen McIntyre, with an offer that could make him a lot of money very quickly; all he has to do is steal some files. Surprisingly Tubbs takes up the offer and steals the files... he is spotted by the cop whose partner died at the start though so he is unlikely to get away with it. It is around now that the big twist is revealed... all of Tubbs actions since the officer was killed have been part of an operation to lure out the leak!

For the first half of this episode I thought Philip Michael Thomas was really over-acting as Tubbs which surprised me as he is usually reliable; but then after the twist is revealed it becomes clear that he was acting Tubbs acting! I knew Tubbs wasn't about to turn bad but I didn't realise he'd been part of an operation from the start. Like many episodes this features up and coming actors; in this case Lou Diamond Philips, Annette Bening and Viggo Mortensen... although you could be forgiven for missing the last of those as he was killed before the opening credits! The story was entertaining in a way that kept this viewer wondering what Tubbs was really up to and there were some good tense action scenes; overall another solid episode in a season with mostly solid episodes.

Emotional shootout!

This episode is a season 3 best! From Tubbs going "over" to one of, if not most emotional shootout finale scenes of the series. The song with the tension and action is perfection.

Has Tubbs Gone Over the Other Side...
errol190920 September 2008
After a perfect, superior, and gritty opening where a young Vice cop is bleeding to death in the arms of Tubbs after an explosion of a rigged hotel room, accompanied in the background of an awesome and striking tune of Thinkman's Best Adventures. The episode then focuses on a Tubbs that we haven't seen before. Tubbs who shocks the audience, quits the force and tosses his badge away and gives Crockett, Castillo, and Switek the cold shoulder and teams up with the bad guys. Is Tubbs really now going over to the other side or is this a game he is playing to snuff out the leak of this major problem?

This is the riveting story that is told in yet another perfect episode from 3 and is thrilling and exciting than any episode from the first two seasons or last two. Nothing beats 3. NOTHING! Another gem! Red Tape tells another great story, with superb characters, sizzling music, perfect and slick action set pieces, along with beautiful and moody cinematic cinematography from the master Oliver Wood. The episode has many first's of Miami Vice, that include the character Tubbs. It's usually Crockett who gets most of the spotlight, but in 3 it was the only time where Tubbs was included in many juicy story lines. The other seasons of Vice which were very weak, had many thin and uninteresting stories that involved Tubbs. Not 3! This story really showcases Tubbs, I mean Philip Michael Thomas talent as an actor.

There are so many great scenes in this episode that involve Tubbs that you don't see the other characters ever perform in the show. Memorable scenes such as:

1. Tubbs throwing his badge on the ground in rage in front of Castillo and walking away with satisfaction. The line he tells him is classic, "I rather play the lottery in New York City, than Russian Rollutte in Miami. I quit."

2. Tubbs going insane at a loan business office and throwing a chair against a glass panel and breaking it in pieces and screaming, "I want my damn money and I want it now!!! CLASSIC!

3. Another memorable scene of Crockett and Tubbs having a discussion in the interrogation room about Tubbs mishap. A great moment in the scene is when Tubbs pushes Crockett's arm away and yells out, "I don't have a partner anymore". Then Crockett says to him, "Let me tell you something pal. You start dealing with loan sharks and Castillo will do more than suspend you. Tubbs replies, "Who's Castillo."

All these great moments tells us one thing. Has Tubbs really gone over the edge? Are the Producers intention is to kill off Tubbs? Has Philip Michael Thomas had enough of this show? That was hotter than ever. What's happening here? All these questions would be answered as the episode progressed with an all out thrilling and emotional climax. The climax that is highlighted by the Alan Parson's Project's gripping and great song "Closer to Heaven" which is used to pace the climax and editing together so perfectly and emotionally. What a climax! Pure Vice! Pure classic. You won't be able to take your eyes off this episode. A lot of surprises and another reason why 3 is the greatest of Vice!

Tubbs goes nuts - one of my favourites!

This is in my top 10 Miami Vice episodes. Don't read anything about it before you watch it as it has some major surprises in it.

I'm surprised nobody has turned this into a big budget thriller - the plot is so clever and exciting.

If I was going to show an episode of MV to a newbie, this might be the one I pick - it has the Miami flavour throughout, and a tough exciting storyline.

Look out for a young Viggo Mortensen (pre-Lord of the Rings) at the opening scene.

Tubbs-centric episode - one of the best. Lots of red sky and sunny shots of Miami.

Not bad, no good just okay!

Warning: Spoilers
Miami Vice Red Tape episode is not bad, no good, just okay! A surprise appearance of Lou Diamond Phillips and Vergo is interesting. The story has a leak in the warrant department which is endangering cops. Tubbs is enraged. Is Tubbs undercover or did Tubbs go to the dark side. Watchable, but predictable. I could not see Tubbs go off character. Sappy ending with Lou diamond Phillips. Okay show six out of 10. Not on my top five list. Season three is a weak for the series.
