- Sgt Gavin Troy: At the moment your dad's listening to Jane Moore's opinions more than he's listening to mine.
- Cully Barnaby: Well, he must have a reason.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: I'm sure he has, because I'm also quite good at knowing what goes on in people's minds. It's part of the job. He should know that.
- [last lines]
- Joyce Barnaby: Tom, why did you ask me to meet you here?
- DCI Tom Barnaby: Because I might need your help with this.
- Joyce Barnaby: All right.
- Dr. Jane Moore: I rang in. They said you found the person responsible for the murders.
- DCI Tom Barnaby: Yes, that's right.
- Dr. Jane Moore: Oh, thank god for that.
- [pause]
- Dr. Jane Moore: So who is it?
- [Tom and Joyce accompany Dr. Moore into the building]
- [first lines]
- Sgt Gavin Troy: Morning, sir.
- DCI Tom Barnaby: Troy.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: His name's Martin Wroath. He lived alone. It's got to be suicide.
- [pause]
- Sgt Gavin Troy: What a way to do it.
- Sarah Wroath: So, how can I help?
- DCI Tom Barnaby: It's about your estranged husband, Martin Wroath.
- Sarah Wroath: Oh no, not more trouble. What's he trying to do to us now?
- DCI Tom Barnaby: Well, whatever he was trying to do, Sarah, he won't be doing it anymore.
- Mary May: I'm sorry he had to do what he did to himself. I suppose some of us could see that coming.
- [pause]
- Mary May: Could have had the decency to give me my money first.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: What money?
- Mary May: He owed me four weeks wages. Then again, he owed a lot of people.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: [to Cully at the mobile library] Sorry for you intellectuals, some of us have to work for a living.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: [inside Cully's mobile library] Cor. You couldn't do a handbrake turn in one of these things, could you? There'd be books everywhere.
- [pause]
- Sgt Gavin Troy: Tell me something, Cully. What do you know about Doctor Jane Moore?
- Cully Barnaby: Why?
- Sgt Gavin Troy: Your dad finds her invaluable.
- Cully Barnaby: I know he asked her to work with him once. It was a difficult case.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: I suppose she solved it for him, did she?
- Cully Barnaby: Well, she must have helped. Dad got a conviction. They spent quite a few days together.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: Must have had you and your mom worried.
- Cully Barnaby: Why would it? It was a working relationship.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: Of course it was.
- Cully Barnaby: Is that all? Only I'm due at the Cross Ways and I'm late.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: Fine. You can drop me off.
- DCI Tom Barnaby: You don't know Dr. Moore,do you?
- Sgt Gavin Troy: No,sir.
- DCI Tom Barnaby: I used the good doctor on a couple of difficult cases. Long before your time, of course.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: For what?
- DCI Tom Barnaby: These days it's called psychological profiling.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: Oh, yes.
- DCI Tom Barnaby: And having a brilliant analytical mind, Dr. Moore was spot on.
- Sgt Gavin Troy: Yeah, well these dried up old academics are all right for a bit of theory long after the event, but your Dr. Moore doesn't have to go out and find it first hand, does he?
- DCI Tom Barnaby: Probably not.
- Dr. Jane Moore: Tom, it's great to see you.
- DCI Tom Barnaby: It's good to see you, too.
