Good old fashioned IMF trickery.

Gregor Antonov is a champion Czech chess player and top scientist. However, he's become disillusioned with his country and would like to defect to the West...where his daughter now lives. However, the secret police will be watching him like a hawk to prevent such a thing...so getting him out of the country will be very difficult. So, the IM Force decides to use an upcoming chess tournament to try to get the man.

This is a very good episode and interestingly it uses the names of real nations--the USSR and Czechoslovakia. The way they used a magic used to whisk Antonov out of the country was brilliant...classic redirection and trickery. Very well done...though I wonder this one, like many of the early "Mission: Impossibles" (1988), was truly original or just a reworking of a much earlier episode of the original series. If it is and you can place it, let me know!

The Pawn is one of Mission Impossible 1988's best episodes. For once the series portrays a chess game in a realistic fashion unlike the episode 'A Game of Chess'.
