Scooby Doo meets Phyllis Diller
TheLittleSongbird16 August 2016
Warts and all, 'The New Scooby Doo Movies' (while with hit and miss guest stars, villains and episodes), though admittedly re-watching the show as an adult this reviewer does like it quite a bit less than when a kid, is one of the stronger Scooby Doo incarnations.

So far, the best of the episodes, watching them in order of release/airing, have been "The Dynamic Scooby Doo Affair" and particularly "Wednesday is Missing", "The Frickert Fracas" is also very entertaining. "A Good Medium is Rare" is perhaps third weakest behind "The Ghastly Ghost Town" and "Guess Who's Knott Coming to Dinner". Just for the record, this reviewer doesn't dislike any of these.

"A Good Medium is Rare" has some great moments, such as agreed the very creepy and entertaining if underused demon creature and some of Scooby and Shaggy's antics early on. Shaggy and Scooby are a joy, as is their charming, amusing and affecting friendship, while Phyllis Diller's guest appearance is a lot of fun with some of the best and funniest lines of the episode.

In fact, the dialogue is endearingly silly and is very funny often and even more so on occasions. The voice acting is very good, from Don Messick, Casey Kasem, Frank Welker and Diller especially.

On the other hand, the story isn't so strong here. The episode does feel too long and too stretched, with a story that has its moments but lacks tightness in the pacing and a quite thin mystery that lacks originality and even fewer surprises.

The rest of the gang are a touch bland this time around, and the villains are okay but not that memorable. 'The New Scooby Doo Movies' was never known for great animation, often it was the worst thing about it, and while there is worse in the series it is definitely less than great here, too often looking flat and crude.

On the whole, decent episode but one of the lesser episodes of the show so far and a bit dull. 7/10 Bethany Cox

The New Scooby-Doo Movies (1972)

"A Good Medium Is Rare"

Scooby and the gang are leaving a movie when they notice a poodle with a diamond collar. The address on it takes them to the home of Phyllis Diller who informs the gang that her house is haunted. Nautrally they start to investigate and come across ghosts, a demon and a couple bad guys trying to steal some jewels. "A Good Medium is Rare" is a pretty bland entry in the series, which once again runs too long and the writing just doesn't give us enough entertainment. The episodes in The New Scooby-Doo Movies were always very hit and miss but this one here is clearly a major miss, which is too bad. There are a few good moments scattered throughout this including the demon creature, which was actually pretty entertaining but he's used way too little. There are also a couple good gags early on with Scooby and Shaggy being scared at the movie theater. Outside of these things the rest is pretty bland. Diller's character comes across more annoying than anything else. The entire bit with her jewels being stolen are just a boring re-trend of stuff we've seen in the original series and nothing new is done here. As far as the mystery goes, it too is rather boring and just never adds up to much. This episode even makes the original gang seem boring.

Diller's Show

Warning: Spoilers
Phyllis is a maddening card here with the gang, calling up spirits of her late husbands.

She has too much fun. When the gang and Diller are trying to open a door, Diller exclaims "too bad I wasn't born strong instead of . . . . GORGEOUS!" Later the gang are all propelled thru a door and Diller sits among the stack of teens and dog, proclaiming "Isn't this F-U-U-U-U-N?" spelling out the word by each letter.

I think this joke is cut out sometimes when the cartoon airs.

Diller would reminesce in a later Cartoon Network special about appearing in the Scooby movie.

"They let me keep many of the antiques from my Scooby movie. -- I married two of them." This IMDb listing isn't complete. There is no listing for either of the 3 Stooges adventures, nor is the Laurel & Hardy adventure listed.
