Naming Names (#5.3)

Warning: Spoilers
Charlie finds out the sex of the baby but Daphne isn't interested. Sarah finds out her birth mother died. Claudia is not that interested in sneaking out of school. Julia is upset because Griffin said he is seeing somebody.

I am kind of happy that Sarah's mother is dead. I don't think it is cruel to think this way because it is a TV character. But it is annoying how she is so much after her mother and not her REAL parents who raised her. They are the ones who made her who she is. It seems like a slap in the face that she takes her biological mother's last name. I hope we will see more of her connecting to her parents and showing that she loves them.

I feel bad for Daphne, I hope she will find her happiness. Maybe she will get happy when the child is born. It was an interesting ending and I liked the conversation she had with Charlie.

The story about Julia and Griffin is interesting. He obviously doesn't have a girlfriend and just wants to push Julia towards moving on. It was a pretty well done story

Good News, Bad News

Warning: Spoilers
Season 5 follows and still is far from the greatness of past seasons. Still, there are some interesting facts sometimes. Charlie finds out that he is going to have a baby girl, but Daphne doesn't want to know, she is not ready to be fond of her baby. As usually, Charlie leans on the love of his life and tells her the news. She is excited and they share a happy moment together (she screams in joy and they happily hug), because they have that in common, they love kids. She says that her sister, Meg, didn't want to know the sex of her baby until is born. It's easy to guess that this happened in 1997 when Kirsten was in Chicago. Meg waited for the drumroll moment in the delivery room which drove Ellie crazy (the trivial fact of the day, Charlie will be an uncle to Meg's kids one day, so Owen will have cousins to play). Anyway, he tells her that Daphne doesn't want to know because she doesn't want to feel attached to the baby. Kirsten doesn't seem to understand Daphne, because they are very different, she'd give anything to be in her position, to be pregnant so she can't believe why Daphne is not happy about having a baby. Later, while playing Trouble with Owen, Kirsten has a slip up and reveals the news to Daphne. That scene was really nice, showed Kirsten playing with her "son", Charlie leaving for work, and the two saying at the same time to Owen and Daphne "Do whatever you want". Remembering season 1 or some moments of season 2, like in Falsies, it's very good to see Kirsten still spending time with Owen. Then, Daphne gets mad at Charlie for telling the news to Kirsten (hey Daphne, Kirsten is his former fiancee, not just girlfriend), but now that she knows, he says he wants to name the baby Diana. Daphne initially disagrees, telling a funny story about a bully neighbor, Diana, she had when she was a child that shaved her dog. Still, Charlie says that his mother is dead and will never meet her grandchild, so his reason matters much more than Daphne's story, "the person who cares the most should win". For this, Daphne storms out, and although he wasn't kind this time, face it, if it wasn't for him, baby Diana would be dead. Despite this, she is not a bad person, she just is who she is (and I can say this because what future episodes show about her). And is not that she doesn't like children (check the birthday party in Fool Rush in), just that she is not ready to be a mother. Anyway, then they finally reach an understanding about getting to the delivery without fighting and in the final scene, seems that she has contractions, but I know it's a false alarm.

After Sarah's parents divorce, all her stuff, puppies and things she had as a kid is moved to the loft by her request (how sweet she is!). So feeling lonely, she wants to talk to her birth mother. Sarah has been in contact mainly through letters with Robin Merrin since 2x16, but in the last months they lost touch. Bailey suggests reaching her through the theater company and they find out bad news after learning that she died in a plane accident in Wyoming (unbelievable her bad luck). She cries and accepts that now she has to let her go as she did with her. Now she wants to look for her birth father (Robin Merrin didn't want her to know about him) and grandparents and although Bailey warns her, she finally finds only her maternal grandfather alive, who is 73 and is too disturbed and overwhelmed to deal with her. It also seems that he is a little bit lost and that his wife died a 3 years ago. He knows that Robin had a daughter she gave for adoption, he didn't approve any of it, so avoids Sarah refusing to believe her story and can't even give her some Robin's belonging (I wonder what happened to Robin's cat, 2x16). Bailey has to comfort her and suggests change her name to Sarah Reeves Merrin. This story was good, especially Sarah's scene with her grandfather, but it's sad that Robin Merrin died. And somehow shows one thing that Bailey and Sarah now have in common: they both lost their parents, in different ways yes, but still.

About Griffin, he is having problems with his job and rent, so with Charlie and Julia's permission, he moves to the shed for a time. He tells Julia he met someone, and tells Julia to do the same, as it gets easier. But then, he speaks to Charlie, while having de ja vu moments of 4x11, that he didn't meet any girl, he is not thinking in anyone so far, so he will never bring someone to the shed. The problem is that later, Julia, falls for the wrong guy, Ned. She goes to a date, to a horror movie (seems connected to Neve Campbell in Scream) with Josh but for unexplainable reasons, she avoids his feelings tries and instead shares a kiss with Ned at the end. Once again, Julia gets into trouble stealing boyfriends. Meanwhile, Claudia befriends rebel girls from her school but she is smart enough to skip the curfews and remain a good student in class. About Claudia's story here, I don't agree with what she said, she told her new friends that in SF, no one watched her, or no asked where she went in the last 4 years. And that's a huge lie because Charlie acted like her father in all that time, he only neglected her in late season 3 and when he got sick. But when Kirsten was around, and in early season 4, she was always taken care of. Besides, it's strange that so far, she doesn't miss much her home.
