The establishing shot of the small desert town is the Mojave Desert (Joshua trees), and the town name is suggestive of Barstow, CA. The guest ranch actually existed in the (then) remote resort of Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs. The interiors, however, seem more appropriate for a resort in Mexico; they were shot in the studio. The nearest town with Mesa in the name would be La Mesa, near San Diego, or Mesa, near Bishop.
One of the early sponsors of the series was the Philip Morris tobacco company. Because of this, there was pressure on the production team to incorporate as much smoking as possible into the scripts during the first few seasons. While this episode shows very few cigarettes being smoked, in the epilogue Perry suddenly leaves the conversation with Paul and Della to buy a pack of cigarettes from a machine that is prominently shown behind them. He rejoins the conversation, but noticeably fiddles with the pack while opening it. He has an unlit cigarette in his hands as the show ends. In addition, a character in the story is a private eye named Philip Morgan, whose name is very suggestive of the tobacco company sponsor's.
