- Wishbone is supposed to be bringing a dead friend's herd to join the drive while Favor is faced with a raging prairie fire that threatens the herd. However, Wishbone learns his friend's ranch hands have a different plan for the herd.
- Wishbone makes a short detour from the drive to meet an old friend, who has a small ranch with 500 head of cattle and 3 drovers. They planned to merge the cattle with Favor's larger cattle drive, but the friend soon dies of natural causes, and the three drovers turn bad and decide to steal the 500 cattle. However, they need the ownership papers which Wishbone has secreted. Wishbone refuses to hand over the papers so two of them (not including Jerry, who has moral doubts) start torturing Wishbone, who resists. To keep Favor and his drovers away, the knaves have Wishbone write a letter explaining his extended absence, which one of them delivers to Favor's camp. However, Wishbone wisely uncharacteristically began the letter "Dear Gil," a tip-off to Rowdy who comes to the rescue.—chipe
- Pete discovering a raging prairie fire while scouting returns to tell Favor who decides to change their route. He is short handed with Scarlet injured and Wishbone gone to pick up a herd owned by Wishbone's friend who passed away. Wishbone is to bring the herd to Favor with the proceeds to go to his friend's daughter with bonuses for his foreman and two ranch hands. Due to a supposed joke by Milt, a suspicious Wishbone hides the ownership papers for the herd - in plain sight. The next day he learns the two ranch hands have coaxed the foreman, Jerry, to steal the herd for themselves. They search the wagon and Wishbone but when they don't find the papers, Milt and Vinnie use torture to force Wishbone to talk. Eventually, they force him to write a letter to Favor stating Wishbone is handling the herd on his own to prevent Favor from missing Wishbone. Meanwhile, the wind has shifted forcing Favor to decide to run the herd through the fire which is unlikely to succeed. When Hey Soos and Rowdy read Wishbone's letter, they know he is in trouble so they leave to help without telling Favor. Without Jerry's help their rescue of Wishbone would have failed while Favor has his prayer answered.—Anonymous
