- Several companies compete to develop a single-seated submersible. Lucas, while testing "The Stinger", is injured during an accident and the submersible is stolen by a competitor.
- Genius teenager, Lucas Wolenczak and SeaQuest officer, LCDR Katherine Hitchcock join forces to design and build prototype underwater high speed vehicle, aka The Stinger or The Gazelle for a competition that the United Earth Oceans (UEO) has established. The competition is secret and even the entrants names kept secret. The Seaquest's entry is discovered and stolen, along with another genius competitor, Dr. Tucker. The Seaquest team recover the destroyed Stinger and Dr. Tucker, who has his own prototype in the race. Lucas and Kate have only 24 hours to replicate their fish-like vehicle. The UEO test occurs between Tucker's and Seaquest's prototype. There are lessons to be learned by Kate and Lucas about the design challenges and the thoroughness of their checks and tests.
The winning prototype is an actual modern day invention. However, the highly experimental tail-fin-underwater submersible was still on the drawing boards at the time of the show's production.
