- While visiting Deep Space 9, a Yridian Jaglom Shrek (James Cromwell) tells Worf his father lives. He says that Mogh was captured by the Romulans from Khitomer and placed in a prison on a remote planet. At first Worf is furious as it is a matter of great dishonor that a Klingon led a life in captivity. Worf is visibly upset and irritated at everyone. Deanna speaks to Worf in his cabin, and Worf confides. He says that if this were true, 3 generations of his family would be dishonored. Even Alexander would bear the brunt of this infamy.
Data finds Dr Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), Chief Medical officer of Deep Space 9, in the sickbay accessing the bay's power supply in an unauthorized manner. He is trying to boost the power of an alien field generator and wants Data to help him. Bashir believes that the device is a medical scanner and wants to see how it operates. As Data tries to turn it on, a discharge from an alien device puts Data in a dream state where he meets his own father Dr Noonien Soong (Brent Spiner). As Data is revived by Geordi, he remembers the images from his dream and is excited that he has dreamed for the first time. There is no rational explanation for his experience as all his systems are working normally.
Data speaks to Worf and says that he dreamed about his father. Worf says that learning about your father teaches you about yourself. That is why no matter where he is, or what he has done, you must find him. This talk also clears up Worf's dilemma for him. Worf decides to go and look for Shrek. Worf forces Shrek to take him to the prison camp which is at the edge of Romulan space.
Data speaks to Picard and tries to understand the meaning of the imagery he saw in his dreams. His father was holding a hammer, but the hammer represents different things in different cultures and civilizations. Picard asks Data to explore the feelings by himself, and not by experiences of others. So, Data starts to paint. Soon, he has made 23 different paintings. With each painting he found a new topic and started to paint that next. Blacksmith, Corridor, Hammer & Anvil, Soong's face, smoke coming out of a bucket, a wing, a bird, a flock of birds, a feather and so on. He also asks Geordi to give him the same power surge, so he can have the vision of his father again. This time, Dr Soong tells Data no man should know where their dreams come from and that is how it is and should be. He tells Data that he is proud of him, as he can now dream.
Basically, Dr Soong had incorporated some neural paths in Data's Positronic brain, which were supposed to get activated after reaching a certain stage of development. The energy surge activated those circuits pre-maturely and allowed Data to dream.
Word and Shrek land 30 Kms away from the Romulan camp and travel to it on foot. Shrek gives Worf a homing device for his ship and leaves, saying that he will return in 50 hours to pick them up. The planet is heavily forested. Worf finds a Klingon female Ba'El (Jennifer Gatti) just outside the location of the camp. Worf says that he has come to rescue the Klingons. Ba'El tells Worf that this is home for her, and she does not wish to be rescued. Worf infiltrates the camp and meets an old Klingon L'Kor (Richard Herd) who tells Worf that Mogh fell at Khitomer.
Worf is told there are 73 Klingons at the camp, and he wants to rescue them. But the older Klingons try to stop Worf from leaving, and when he resists the Romulans come with their phasers and stop Worf.
