- When a female crew member is infatuated with Lieutenant Commander Data, he decides to give a romantic relationship a try. Also, the Enterprise finds itself having to maneuver through a dangerous nebula.
- When the Enterprise enters the uncharted Mar Oscura dark matter nebula, Data is in charge of scientific observations, together with young Lieutenant Jenna D'Sora, who shows a romantic interest in him. The human crew is clearly unable and/or reluctant to give Data reliable advice, and Troi warns him against trusting in literature on the subject, but since Riker says nothing beats true love Data decides to try 'running' a romantic program with her, yet method is madness in a human lover's eyes. Arriving at an M-class planet's coordinates, the Enterprise finds it inexplicably gone, while Worf fears disappearances and unexplained entries aboard constitute a major security risk. Indeed, the next strikes take victims among machines and crew, but according to Data all can result from proximity of so much dark matter causing gaps of space, which the ship phases in and out of. - The Enterprise is studying a dark matter nebula, one that is thicker and more dense than anything they have ever encountered. They are curious to learn how such a nebula might have affected the development of life forms. They locate an M-class planet that would be ideal for their study but when they arrive at the coordinates, there is no planet to be found. It all points to a far more dangerous problem. Meanwhile, Lt. Commander Data has become the object of Lt. Jenna D'Sora's affections. She has recently ended a relationship with another crewman but Data isn't quite sure how to react. He seeks advice from several colleagues but few can explain to him the complexities of love and a relationship. He certainly gives it his best effort however.—garykmcd
- When the Enterprise enters the uncharted Mars Oscura dark matter nebula. The Enterprise shoots photon torpedoes to light up the nebula. To test the impact of the nebula on life, they decide to survey a few M class planets surrounding the nebula.
Data is in charge of scientific observations, together with young Lieutenant Jenna D'Sora (Michele Scarabelli), who shows a romantic interest in him. Jenna's interest in Data started when she broke up with her current boyfriend, and Data started giving her music lessons. From there the interactions increased and oblivious to Data, they blossom into love for Jenna. Data is oblivious to the fact that he moved from friend to boyfriend for Jenna, without him knowing it. Data makes Jenna laugh with his stoic responses, which she finds funny. One day Data is startled when Jenna kisses him flush on the lips.
The human crew is clearly unable and/or reluctant to give Data reliable advice (Including Guinan and Geordi), and Troi warns him against trusting in literature on the subject. Guinan says that this is Data's first love affair, and he will just need to figure it out for himself. Geordi says that Jenna is on a rebound and this may not be the best time to approach her. But then if both of them are ready for a serious relationship, then maybe its OK. Data is more confused. Worf warns Data that Jenna is under his command. And if she is mistreated, Worf would be very displeased.
Since Riker says nothing beats true love Data decides to try 'running' a romantic program with her, yet method is madness in a human lover's eyes. Data brings Jenna flowers and attempts to give her a hug. He says that he has diverted a significant proportion of his internal resources to the romantic subroutine and then proceeds to awkwardly kiss her. Jenna is not impressed with the "program". Data realizes that he has much to learn when he finds that Jenna says something but means and wants him to do exactly the opposite. Data decides to give Jenna his undivided attention, but that seems fake to Jenna, and she feels Data is smothering her. Jenna finds the whole experience very forced and artificial.
Arriving at an M-class planet's coordinates, the Enterprise finds it inexplicably gone, and finds it reappeared just in a few moments. Meanwhile Worf fears disappearances and unexplained entries aboard the ship constitute a major security risk. Eg Picard finds the contents of his desk, suddenly below the desk. Data senses that the contents of his room have moved.
Indeed, the next strikes take victims among machines and crew. Panels shift in and out of phase, structural damage between decks, a crewman dies when she phases in between decks. According to Data all can result from proximity of so much dark matter causing gaps of space, which the ship phases in and out of.
Data says that dark matter pockets in the nebula cause the phasing whenever they hit the ship. But they cannot be detected until they are too close to the ship itself. So, the plan is to send an observational shuttle ahead of the Enterprise, which Picard decides to pilot himself. The shuttle can detect the pockets and maneuver the shuttle out of the way. Picard manages to steer the Enterprise but has damage to the shuttle along the way. Miles has to beam him back on board when the shuttle is on the verge of destruction.
Eventually The Enterprise is at the periphery of the nebula and makes a run for it.. Jenna breaks up with Data as he is simply not emotional
