- Geordi can barely curtail his enthusiasm at being able to test out a new theory of transportation, as Worf's mother boards the Enterprise with his son and news that Worf's Earthly parents can no longer care for him.

- The Enterprise is sent on a mission to test a new propulsion technology that uses Soliton waves and could revolutionize travel. While collecting the scientist responsible for the new technology, Lt. Worf receives a message from his mother who has arrived on board a freighter with Worf's son Alexander. She tells him that Alexander needs a father and that she can no longer care for him. Worf is uncomfortable in the father role and Alexander shows himself to be difficult, regularly telling lies. When the test of the experimental propulsion system goes dangerously wrong, Alexander's life is put in danger forcing Worf to take extraordinary steps.—garykmcd
- The Enterprise goes to planet Bilana III to assist in testing the new propulsion method Soliton waves. Dr Ja'Dar (Richard McGonagle) is running the experiment. The planet will generate Soliton waves in the direction of a test ship. The Enterprise will have to be positioned within 20 Kms of the test ship to receive telemetry data. The test will end with a sister planet Lemma II sending a dissipating wave, which will cancel the wave from Bilana, and end the experiment.
Lieutenant Worf is visited by his mother Helena (Georgia Brown) and young son Alexander Rozhenko (Brian Bonsall), who intends to stay with him. Helena and her husband are getting old and cannot take care of Alexander anymore. Helena leaves the Enterprise on an Earth bound transport.
Worf soon finds the burdens of paternal duties cumbersome. Worf realizes he doesn't even know Alexander's birthday, plus he is interrupted at work every few minutes with issues originating due to Alexander on the ship. Specifically, as the frustrated schoolboy proves dishonorably mischievous. Alexander steals a model of the lizard from his class. His teacher Ms Kyle (Jennifer Edwards) asks Alexander to put it back, but Worf is upset that Kyle accused Alexander of stealing. But Kyle was right, and the model lizard was found by Worf in Alexander's jacket.
Worf explains the value of honor to Alex and tells him moral tales from Klingon culture. Kyle complains to Worf after a few days, that Alexander is defiant and aggressive. Alexander still lies. Worf confronts Alexander and says he will now be put into a Klingon school who will teach him the lesson that Worf himself could not. Deanna speaks to Worf and helps him understand that maybe Alexander feels abandoned since he was sent to his grandparents after his mother died and now his father seems keen to get rid of him by sending him to Klingon school.
The propulsion experiment goes horribly wrong. The Soliton wave takes the test ship at 2.35 warp. At first, things go smoothly, but soon the Soliton wave efficiency drops from 98% to 73%. The wave becomes unstable and expands towards the Enterprise. As Geordi tries to compensate, the test ship explodes, and the Enterprise is shaken up badly and drops out of warp itself. But the wave is still in space.
The wave continues towards Lemma II and has increased in velocity to warp 4.1. By the time it reaches Lemma II, it will increase 200 times and will destroy the planet. Geordi and Data propose to set up an explosion in front of the Soliton wave, but that requires the Enterprise to travel through it (as there isn't enough time to go around it). Enterprise's shields are down to 33%. As the Enterprise goes through the wave, the shields are down to 12% and aft shields have some gaps as they have been radiated with ion radiation. Picard orders complete evacuation of the impacted sections.
Unknown to everyone, Alexander is hiding in one of the aft sections. The computer warns the bridge of Alex being left in the aft section in bio-lab. Picard cannot allow the colony to be destroyed and has limited time to execute. He gives Worf and Riker 3 mins to save Alexander. Worf and Riker find Alex pinned under some rubble and save him just before Picard fires the torpedoes to disrupt the Soliton wave. All is well, as Alex is saved, and the wave is disrupted. Worf decides to keep Alexander with him.
