- Dr. Crusher falls for someone who's not at all what she expects him to be.
- Doctor Beverly Crusher is secretly in love with Federation ambassador Odan, who is on his way to the Alpha Moon which is rebelling against the planet they were colonized from and causes potentially fatal environmental damage to the Beta Moon. Crusher ignores the fact that her humanoid lover's body has an alien symbiont in his entrails, but Counselor Deanna Troi empathically senses emotional swings which set her on the trail. An unrequested escort vessel from the Beta Moon then approaches and attacks the Enterprise shuttle which Commander Will Riker was piloting to take the ambassador to his destination. When Riker brings Odan back to the Enterprise badly wounded, Crusher's diagnosis reveals the 'parasite' and she learns his true identity. Odan urgently needs another humanoid host to perform his peace mission, for which task Riker volunteers.—KGF Vissers
- Dr. Crusher has fallen hopelessly in love with Ambassador Odan who is aboard the Enterprise en route to negotiate a truce between two warring parties. When they arrive at their destination, Odan insists on being transported to the planet's surface by shuttle craft rather than the transporter. The shuttle is attacked and Odan is severely injured. It's only at that point that they learn that Odan is a Trill made up of a symbiont in a host body. As it will take some time for a new replacement host body to arrive they transfer the symbiont into Riker's body to allow the negotiations. Dr. Crusher is now ill at ease with her lover in Riker's body but she is in for a greater shock when the new host arrives.—garykmcd
- Doctor Beverly Crusher is secretly in love with Federation ambassador Odan (Nicole Orth-Pallavicini), who is on his way to the Alpha Moon (Of planet Peliar Zel) which is rebelling against the planet they were colonized from and causes potentially fatal environmental damage to the Beta Moon. Crusher ignores the fact that her humanoid lover's body has an alien Symbiont in his entrails (It is common knowledge that Trill are a unique species who live within a host body and Crusher is unaware of it), but Counsellor Deanna Troi Empathically senses emotional swings which set her on the trail.
Leka Trion (Barbara Tarbuck) is the ambassador of Peliar Zel. Leka informs Picard that people from their planet migrated to the moon several centuries ago and are like squabbling children. People of Alpha moon have found a way to tap into the magnetic field of Peliar Zel and rely on that exclusively as an energy source. But this is causing environmental damage on the beta moon as a result. Data suggests that Beta Moon will undergo global warming due to these changes. Alpha refuses to give up their energy source and both sides are arming for war. Leka wants the squabble to stop, and a solution found. In the event of war, the people of Peliar Zel will begin to take sides, and Leka believes that this would lead to further complications.
Picard arranges for a meeting with both world leaders, but Odan prefers to shuttle there instead of beaming down. Even though Leka warns of radicals who want to derail the peace process.
An unidentified ship (which claims to be an escort vessel) from the Beta Moon then approaches and attacks the Enterprise shuttle which Commander Will Riker was piloting to take the ambassador to his destination. When Riker brings Odan back to the Enterprise badly wounded, Crusher's diagnosis reveals the 'parasite' and she learns his true identity as a Trill. The body is just a host, and the parasite is the true-life form that Odan insists must survive. The Trill is a joint species, a host, and a Symbiont. Odan begs Beverly to ask the Trill to send a new host. The body dies and Beverly puts the parasite in Statis, where it can survive for 2 hours. Trill can send a new host in 40 hours.
Odan urgently needs another humanoid host to perform his peace mission, for which Riker volunteers. There is precedence for a human host, so the procedure carries obvious risks.
Odan takes over Riker's body. Odan asks Leka to convince the Alpha and Beta moons to accept him as Odan, but Leka can't promise anything. Riker (as Odan) again hits on Beverly, but she is not attracted to Odan's new host. Beverly confesses to Deanna that she sees Riker as a brother and is very confused about what she is supposed to feel under the circumstances. Soon Bolian (Buddy Daniels Friedman) and Kadin (William Newman) arrive on the Enterprise representing their moons. They accept Odan as their mediator, in his new host Riker, when Odan tells them accurate histories of their past negotiations with him. These histories and instances were not part of documented knowledge and Odan knew them as he himself was part of those negotiations. The negotiations are going well, but Riker is in intense pain. Riker's body is rejecting Odan. Eventually Beverly has warm feelings towards Odan, even though it is in Riker's body.
Odan tells Beverly to remove him from Riker's body at the end of that day (after the Mediations, regardless of the outcome). Riker will not survive his presence any longer. The negotiations go on for 6 hours and the Trill ship carrying host bodies is still 9 hours away. Riker collapses. The negotiations are a success. Picard takes the Enterprise towards the Trill ship, while Beverly removes Odan from Riker. The new host body arrives in the nick of time, but it's a woman Kareel (Nicole Orth-Pallavicini). Beverly decides she can't put up with this and breaks up with Odan.
