- The Enterprise discovers debris from a mid 21st century NASA spacecraft around an inhospitable planet. They then discover a zone of breathable area with a structure in it. When Riker, Worf and Data beam down, they are trapped in a mid 1980's Las Vegas Casino that is based around a poorly written novel entitled 'The Hotel Royale.'—Michael W Hughes
- When the Enterprise is advised by a passing Klingon vessel of strange debris in orbit around a nearby planet in theta 116 system, they investigate only to find a piece of a NASA spacecraft emblazoned with the US flag. The planet below has severe weather (with ammonia atmosphere, temperature of -291 degrees Celsius, and winds of 312 meters per second) and an toxic atmosphere except for one small area that appears to be inhabitable by humans. The spacecraft from that era could not have traveled this far. In addition, it seems to have been hit by weapons from the present time.
Riker, Data and Worf beam down to the surface only to find a single revolving door leading them to the casino floor in the Hotel Royale. They soon find that they are trapped there and cannot exit (Phasers won't work either). As soon as they have entered, they lose communications with the Enterprise. The Assistant Manager (Sam Anderson) of the hotel says they have been expecting them. A bellboy (Leo Garcia) tells the manager that he is in love with Rita, but the Manager discourages the bellboy as Rita is with Mickey D (Greg Beecroft). The hotel is full if guests and an overflowing casino bustling with activity. None of the people in the hotel are emitting life signs. They exist, but do not register as humans or machines. The assistant manager insists that they are on Earth. None of the guests interact with the Enterprise landing party, and there are no other doors or windows in the hotel. Their phasers are not effective. The hotel structure was made to resemble 20th century Earth.
Picard has Geordi and Wesley work on finding new frequencies that can cut through the interference.
As they explore the hotel, they find the remains of a human, dead for several centuries. This is NASA astronaut Col Richey, who was on the ship Enterprise found. They also find his diary and a cheap pulp fiction novel that seems to be the story taking place in the hotel itself. The astronaut has been dead for 283 yrs. In the diary, Col Richey notes that his ship was infected by an alien life form that infected and killed everyone on board the ship, but him. The alien life form brought Richie to the planet and kept him alive out of some sense of guilt. The hotel Royale was created by using the novel as reference for Earth's preferred lifestyle. Richie survived in this environment for 38 years, before dying. Wesley finds the frequency to create a communications link with the away team.
Picard and Geordi create a plan to slice through the shield to transport the away team, but the atmosphere would rush in, and the team would not survive for more than 12 seconds. Picard reads the novel and figures that it ends with Mickey D making an appearance and shooting the bellboy to keep him away from Rita. He tells Riker that post the shooting foreign investors buy the hotel for $12.5 M and leave the hotel, leaving the assistant manager to run it. Riker reckons this is their way out of the hotel.
The trio needs $12.5 M to buy the hotel. Data finds that the dice are rigged. He fixes them and starts winning at craps. They amass enough money to buy the hotel for its asking price. Now they are able to leave and beam back to the Enterprise.
