- A dying anti-social scientist unintentionally comes upon the perfect vessel in which to preserve his intellect and arrogant personality - Data.
- The Enterprise responds to a request for medical assistance from Dr. Ira Graves, considered by many to be the greatest living mind in the universe. Graves didn't want any help. The Enterprise was summoned by his assistant, Kareen. Graves, a crotchety old man who doesn't really like people, is now in the terminal stage of an illness. Having taught Data's creator, Dr. Soong, everything he knows, he fancies himself Data's grandfather. Knowing his end is near, he transfers all of his knowledge and intellect into Data. - The Enterprise goes out of its way to perform a tricky teleportation, allowing an away party to respond to a mystery distress call from the small, private planet where great, old galactic genius Ira Graves lives and works with his attractive young assistant Kareen Brianon. She was right in seeking the medical help he objects to, as he's diagnosed with a terminal disease. Fascinated by Data, he spends his last hours with the android, whose creator's mentor he was. When Data returns aboard, his character changes, more assertive and obsessed with Kareen, whom the Enterprise is taking to an inhabited planet. Gradually, Picard comes to realize Data has been implanted with Ira's memories, along with his cocky personality that overrules Data's own.—KGF Vissers
- Data's "grandfather," Dr. Ira Graves, is close to death. Dr. Graves transfers his mind, will and emotions into Data and expires. Data now has two personalities, his own being slowly erased by that of Dr Graves; thus, Data is "The Schizoid Man."—Anonymous
- The Enterprise responds to a request for medical assistance from Dr. Ira Graves (William Morgan Sheppard), considered by many to be the greatest living mind in the universe on molecular Cybernetics, who lives isolated on his home planet Gravesworld. Graves didn't want any help. The Enterprise was summoned by his assistant, Kareen (Barbara Alyn Woods). Graves, a crotchety old man who doesn't really like people, is now in the terminal stage of an illness (Darnay's disease).
Meanwhile Data is feeling insecure about his looks. He grows a beard so that he can appear more mature and intellectual.
While nearing Gravesworld, Enterprise receives a distress signal from another ship USS Constantinople ferrying settlers. Wesley thinks there are 2012 souls on board. Riker suggests dropping a team on Graveworld and then assist the ferry ship. Pulaski wants to be on the ship to assist Constantinople, so Picard asks her to pick a replacement for Gravesworld.
Pulaski selects Dr Selar (Suzie Plakson) to lead the away to help Ira. Selar goes with Worf, Data and Deanna. Selar is a Vulcan. Ira is fond of beautiful women and hits on both Deanna and Selar. Meanwhile the Enterprise has fixed the Constantinople and is heading back to Gravesworld.
Having taught Data's creator, Dr. Soong, everything he knows, he fancies himself Data's grandfather. Selar informs Graves that he is in the final stages of Darnay's disease and cannot be cured. Selar gives Graves not more than a week.
Graves feels pity for Data that he has no feelings and hence will never know any kind of emotion. Graves says he has learned to download his knowledge and intellect into a computer. Data tells Graves that he has an off switch, which renders him dead for all intents and purposes. Knowing his end is near, Graves transfers all of his knowledge and intellect into Data. Ira dies soon thereafter. Enterprise leaves Gravesworld with Kareen, with the aim to leave her at the nearest star base.
As a result, Data begins to act irrationally, becoming a cause of concern to Picard and others. He is hitting on Kareen, acts very emotionally in situations (A long and poetic speech as Ira's eulogy), whistles like Ira used to, chases women (Ira had a thing for young women). Data reacts angrily when Picard is friendly towards Kareen. He calls Picard an old man of limited intellect. Deanna senses an intense, burning jealousy. It is a human emotion and she sensed it was coming from Data.
Picard orders a full diagnostic of his circuits, which reveal no issue. Deanna suggests a psychiatric evaluation. Post the test Deanna reports to Picard that Data has a split personality disorder. He has 2 personalities, a dominant and a recessive. His dominant personality is unstable. Brilliant, but vain and prone to irrationality. The dominant hates any authority figure, including Picard. The dominant personality is growing and will soon gobble up the recessive, or the Data that they all know.
Meanwhile Data admits to Kareen, that he is Ira inside Data's body. He has switched off Data and downloaded himself into Data's body. Kareen tells Ira that she doesn't love him. Data was gripping Kareen's hand and squeezes it very tightly and even hurts her. Meanwhile speaking to Selar & Deanna, Picard figures that Ira has somehow downloaded himself into Data's body.
Picard confronts Ira in Data's body and tells him how he has fractured Kareen's hand and hurt more people in engineering. Picard convinces Ira that he does not have the right to "kill" Data and occupy his body. He also tells Ira that in Data's body, sooner or later, he will end up killing more people. Ira is finally convinced after he hits and injures Picard as well. He leaves and allows Data to live. But Kareen discovers that he is in the ship's computer. There is knowledge but no consciousness.
