A dangerous mind
Have loved 'Taggart' (another show gotten into during my teenage years) for a long time, although the more deliberate and even grittier Taggart and Jardine periods to me are superior to Burke's. Although it was actually through watching the late afternoon reruns of the Burke period episodes (starting from "Compensation" right up to when the episodes became shorter (too short in my mind) at one point that got me hooked, the Taggart and Jardine episodes were actually seen a lot later.
"Mind Over Matter" is not quite one of my favourite 'Taggart' episodes and there are actually even better episodes from the Burke period (i.e. "Compensation", "Puppet on a String"). It is still though cleverly plotted and intriguing with a memorable climax, and a healthy dose of Jackie Reid (the longest serving regular who was consistently a show high-point ever since she first appeared) is always welcome.
Is it quite as twisty or as intricate as other episodes? Not quite.
Not that that matters massively though because as already indicated "Mind Over Matter" is still an excellent episode of 'Taggart'. It is well-made visually, with the usual grit and moodiness in the photography. The scenery is both picturesque and unforgiving. The music matches that perfectly and the main theme is not one to forget.
Writing is both entertaining and intriguing with a tough edge. The story avoids trying to do too much but at the same time it is not too simple either, the tone is suitably disturbingly uncompromising, one is kept guessing right to the end who the killer is and what the motive is and the climax is memorably dramatic without being over-the-top. Jackie's demons do not dominate too much and the therapy setting intrigues throughout. The rest of the team are hardly underused and are neither disconnected or confused. The acting is very good, with Blythe Duff faring best.
Summing up, excellent. 9/10
