Memorable Performance By Suzanne Kent
ccthemovieman-118 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Suzanne Kent's character, "Angela Matusa" wound up so memorable that the writers followed up with her with an episode the following season. In Season Two, "Angela" had dropped 100 pounds and......well, it, too, was an interesting episode, as this one was.

The program begins with references to Angela and her being one of the main voices of Bobby's answering service. You see, back in the mid '70s there were no answering phones apparently. (I can't remember, myself). Bobby, to find out if he had any calls with messages, would contact this service and a woman would read him messages. Apparently Angela not only had a good voice but was extremely nice and personal and everyone enjoyed talking to her.

To make a long story short, Alex winds up getting a date with her. Wow, Angela does not turn out to be whom Alex and the boys thought. But it isn't that she's a heavy woman, it's that her personality and attitude are the world's worst. Talk about a person with a complex!

She makes the night really tough on poor Alex......but.....like this show tended to do, it leaves on a nice note with a touching scene. Alex does and says all the right things, which is why he is the "leader" of this small group of cabbies that we laugh with every week on this great TV show.

Funny episode.

One of those television episodes that simply wouldn't get the greenlight nowadays due to its perceived offensiveness. Alex goes on a blind date with a woman who sounds attractive over the phone, and she's not exactly what he pictured. Honestly, it's hilarious.

Blind Date

Warning: Spoilers
This episode certainly would not fly today, but it proved to be pretty interesting. Looking back on it 40 years later it is incredible to see how far society has evolved and in some ways how far we still have to go.

A lot of people would write off a larger woman, but Alex going back showed character. Interesting, and it had some laughs, that's about all you could ask for when a comedy tries to prove a point.

Alex's blind date with the phone lady.
TxMike21 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I have very few "favorite" TV series from my 55 years of watching, but the old "Taxi" series is one of my very favorites. I am currently re-watching all the old episodes on DVD. Any "SPOILER" will be clearly marked.

Jeff Conaway is aspiring actor Bobby, and has a phone message center as part of his method to find jobs. The lady he usually talks to is "Angela" who is very, very nice on the phone but none of them have ever met her. Alex even talked to her for an hour one time, and it was one of the most pleasant experiences he had.

Judd Hirsch is Alex Reiger and one day while Bobby is checking his message hands the phone to Alex, to speak with Angela. Egged on by his friends, Alex makes a dinner date with Angela.

When he arrives at her door, the "sweet" Angela is a bitter, sullen person, almost impossible to have a normal conversation with. Alex is caught off guard and tries everything to make this date turn out well. They go to dinner but it too is a bad experience.

Suzanne Kent is Angela Matusa, a New York girl, with a low self-concept and that is keeping her from allowing a relationship, or even a conversation, to be productive.

SPOILERS: Angela has a pretty face, but she is rather large and very few men would give her a second look. Most women would not want to be around her. So she is depressed and her defense mechanism is to lash out at everyone. By the end of the episode Alex convinces her that he really is interested in her as a person, that he is willing to be "friends". They hug, and we find out that Angela needs hugs badly.

Alex and the psycho chick
ronnybee211222 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Alex meets in-person a woman he has talked to on the phone a few times. She is a receptionist somewhere that Alex has called a few times.

She turns out to be a ranting, obnoxious, selfish, basket-case type that is full of self-pity and problems. To top it off,she is overweight and not at all attractive. (Oh boy 🤡) Anybody else would have bailed-out within the first 5 minutes of her first 'poor-me' rant, but not our Alex.

In a painfully-long exchange (which sounds like 3rd-graders trying to set boundaries on a friendship with the opposite sex) Alex and the woman agree to try being friends.

After pushing this toxic, abrasive character onto us,the audience, this lady character was only seen in one more episode for a total of 2. (I haven't seen the second one yet)

This is a shame because actress Suzanne Kent does a great job portraying this unpleasant "Angela" character. It sure seems that her character was destined for at least several more appearances, if not a permanent part. So what happened to her? She could have been a perfect wildcard in my opinion.

One of the most challenging Taxi episodes,best-acted but worst-written in that the end isn't satisfying,it kind of leaves things hanging. Skip it if you are looking for the usual hilarious show, this is kind of a downer.
