For this episode they redesigned the jail to make the plot work. The cells were open to the sheriff's office where in the past there was a wall and door between the cells and the office.
The first time a "Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity" plea was used in the United States was in 1859, 40 years before this series is set. Daniel Sickles was tried for murdering his wife's lover, Phillip Barton Key II, the District Attorney of District of Columbia and the son of Francis Scott Key. Sickles was acquitted, went on to become a General in the US Army, and was awarded a Medal of Honor for actions at Gettysburg.
