Robert Ryan: Bob Stuart

Quotes

  • Bob Stuart : You've got older in the last ten years, Smith, but not much wiser.

  • Cooper Smith : Hello, Stuart. I see you've stopped wearing that licence for murder.

Bob Stuart : This is my wedding day, so if you don't mind.

Cooper Smith : Don't you feel kinda undressed without a shotgun?

Bob Stuart : One of the hazards of having been a marshal you keep running across the scum you dealt with.

Cooper Smith : You never dealt with anybody except from behind.

Bob Stuart : One thing none of you has ever done is put a hand on me.

[a fist fight ensues until the Sherrif intervenes]

  • Thomas Lance : There's still a lot of good money for a man who can use a gun like you. Fact is me and Felix were just talking about maybe the three of us together again. Coop, that whole Texas frontier's busting loose, ranchers paying any price to protect their fences.

Bob Stuart : I lost my taste for drawing gun pay a long time ago, Thomas.

  • Bob Stuart : Quite a coincidence you two always heading in my direction. Down in Abilene, now in this wagon Train.

Thomas Lance : Just mentioning that to Felix, Mr Stuart. Real coincidence.

Bob Stuart : You keep heading in my direction, you may find yourself needing more than a glib tongue.

Thomas Lance : Well, I guess I don't understand that remark, Mr Stuart.

    Bob Stuart : You understand.

  • Christopher Hale : I usually try to keep my nose where it belongs. But could there be anything I might be able to iron out for you?

Bob Stuart : I doubt it. I shot him in the back. From an ambush.

Christopher Hale : I take it you thought you had a good reason?

Bob Stuart : The best in the world. I was a 90 a month marshal riding into a range war where the pay went often as $500 for a man like Smith. I felt it was a simple equation. To come out alive I had to have the fear of God on my side. And before that day was finished, your Smith was in the hospital with a shotgun blast in the back. Two of his men were dead and that young man over there, that young man had my shotgun broken over his skull. My only regret was that I didn't leave more of them lying there dead. Can I get you another piece of cake?

  • Bob Stuart : Mind if we clear up a few things?

Cooper Smith : I mind breathing the same air as you.

  • Bob Stuart : You probably have a lot of questions to answer, Smith. If you gave them a chance to surrender? Were you sure they couldn't be taken alive? Why were they shot in the back? People do ask those questions, Smith. Intelligent people like yourself.

  • Cooper Smith : There's a spring up there. The only water between here and Colby. That's probably where they'll camp for the night.

Bob Stuart : Yeah. I'm sure you'd be familiar with their hideouts.
