Ash the gang get lost in the woods, as illusions surround them.
Hoothoot gets a suitable introduction here, as guides to help trainers through the haunted forest. The illusions created in the forest turn out to be caused by some pesky Haunters and Gengars. The illusions are the best part of the episode, with the Dragonite and the closing "beach" scene as the highlights. Hagatha and Nagatha are great characters-of-the-day too.
An issue I have with this episode is that Ash acts really off-character for a lot of it. I didn't really understand why they had Ash act so belligerent to Hoothoot, constantly over-pushing it when it was struggling. It reminded me of early season 1 episodes where Ash was making these rookie mistakes, and has now very much grown past that method of training. Seeing that regression lost the episode some points, but it's still a solid one.

This is another classic episode of Pokémon anime around of the Johto series. Somehow like a few episodes like one with the giant Gengar or Ninetales in the mansion illusion this is partially scary or get the sense of fear.
So Ash and his group are lost in the woods and to make it worse, it's dark night-time. They are confronted by Gary which is kinda coincidental and he's got owl pokémon Hoothoot which has power to see through illusions (caused by pesky Haunter and Gengar) prompting Ash and co to get one themselves.
Other reviewer mentioned Ash was out of character, and I guess despite the mean behaviour he turns into an army drill sergeant for the pokémon to see sense and help them properly.
Even that one moment Hoothoot rental woman Hagatha mention Hoothoot has interest in pretty girls - Misty rightfully goes at Ash over his remark. That and other hilarious moments like Team Rocket fooled and chasing the illusion of Dragonite and ending scene of them visualisation of sunbathing on beach.
